NSAC dedicates an entire building to the Vet Tech program. This small animal teaching hospital space is the heart of our program. It is where NSAC veterinary technician students learn the necessary radiology, anesthesia and nursing skills required to become veterinary technicians. This space is in accordance with the standards set by NSVMA for small animal hospitals. It is not open to the public.
The NSAC campus farm allows access to a wide variety of animal species. We focus on companion animals but still develop knowledge and skills for providing care to cows, horses, exotics and sheep. Exposure to other species such as mink and poultry is also incorporated.
Our program has been accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA). This means graduates are eligible to write their Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). NSAC veterinary technician graduates have a history of excelling in this exam.
Instructors in the veterinary technology program have over 50 years combined experience in the field. You are taught by veterinary technicians, veterinarians and other professional faculty. Many of the instructors still work in private practices. This helps keep our programs current.
Three practical internship/externship courses are included in our program. They are an on-campus internship, an Atlantic Veterinary College externship (50 per cent companion animal, 50 per cent large animal) and a general veterinary practice externship. By the time you have graduated you will have worked with numerous experts, made valuable connections and had an opportunity to practice your skills.
We seek new enriching experiences for our students. We are here because we not only love veterinary medicine, but we love teaching.
