The Veterinary Technology (Vet Tech or VT) is a two-year program composed largely of career-directed courses. It is designed to prepare students with the skills and knowledge required to work as technical assistants to practicing veterinarians, researchers and other persons who deal with animals, especially in the context of medicine or science. Our primary purpose is to graduate skilled, competent veterinary technicians prepared to work in small animal private practice.
The large animal component of the Vet Tech Program is designed to help those graduates who choose to work in mixed practices and those who wish to further develop their clinical skills in livestock and equine medicine.
Our program is diverse. We expose our students to a variety of species including livestock, equine and lab animal species so they can acquire the necessary nursing skills to confidently treat these patients out of the realm of small animal practice.
We nurture student’s interest and encourage practical experiences. Our veterinary technology program has the advantage of the NSAC farm with it’s diversity of animal units, excellent facilities and highly knowledgeable and capable staff.
Aside from small animal practice, career paths include: animal shelter manager, veterinary-related sales representative, research animal technician and opportunities in food inspection, as examples.
At the end of the program, graduates will be prepared to immediately step out of class and be a successful veterinary technician working in small animal veterinary practices.
