Residence Office
The staffing and day-to-day management of residences is the responsibility of the Residence Manager. The office of the Residence Manager and staff is located in Fraser House. The Residence Manager is responsible for the physical aspects of all the residences and distribution of keys. The office processes bills for damages and oversees maintenance requests. The Residence Manager also serves as Co-ordinator of Summer Conference programs, facility reservations and Manager of the Alumni Theatre.
Residence Staff
Each residence is supervised by a Don of Residence, who lives in an apartment located within the residence. The Don is responsible for the quality of residence life, which is maintained through the supervision of the student residence staff.
A member of the Student Staff (an RA - Residence Assistant) lives in each wing of the residence. RAs are hired by NSAC as mentors and advisors to residence students. The RAs receive training in listening skills, first aid, drug/alcohol awareness and in dealing with difficult situations. RAs provide security for students in the residence and, when necessary, bring unacceptable behaviour to the attention of the Don and the Student Judicial Committee.
The Student Campus Security is hired by the Safety & Security Coordinator in consultation with the Associate Vice President for Students. The Campus Security staff members receive training and take their day-to-day direction from the Safety & Security Coordinator. The Student Campus Security provides security in the residences and surrounding areas on an as-needed basis. Security also deals with parking in the Residence Horseshoe and residence parking lots. Campus Security provides security at campus student events.
House Council
Each residence has a council elected by the students of the House and is accountable to the students of the House, Students’ Union and NSAC. The House Council is responsible for House fees and is accountable to the students of the House, the Student Union and to NSAC for the expenditure of those funds. House funds may be used to sponsor House events and buy equipment for the House. Funds may not be used to buy alcohol. The House Council is responsible for regular meetings with the Don of Residence, planning House events, preparing a budget, posting and circulating minutes of council meetings and for promoting a positive/constructive House spirit. The House Council President serves as a member of the Students’ Union and represents the students of the house to that body.
