Myth: Residence is loud and people party all the time
FACT:
Residence students are encouraged to have a healthy social life. Each NSAC residence building has quiet sections that remain quiet all the time. Further, quiet hours start at 10:00pm Sunday - Thursday and 1:00am on Friday and Saturday for all sections. Students who choose to socialize after these hours can do so in their room with the door closed ( as long as the noise level is kept at a respectful level and does not bother other students who are studying or sleeping. Myth: Students who live in residence party all the time
FACT:
Animal House was a funny movie - however, residence students have 8:00am classes, labs and assignments like all students. Parties are limited to times that do not impact the rights of others to sleep and study.
Myth: One residence building is the party building on campus
FACT:
NSAC has three buildings - each with their unique community. However, all three buildings have the same rules that are consistently enforced by residence staff.
Myth: Anyone can access residence buildings
FACT:
NSAC Residence buildings are locked 24/7, only students assigned a room in a specific building have keys to the front door . Everyone must enter/exit through the front doors. All other doors are for emergency exit only and are alarmed to prevent unauthorized entry.
Students are permitted guests in residence but must ensure they have a guest pass from residence staff. Residence students are never allowed to give their residence key to a guest and guests must remain with their sponsor.
Myth: Once young people go to University they are expected to fend for themselves.
FACT:
The best part of living in residence is that there is a whole team of people in place to assist students with questions and concerns. The residence office is located in Fraser House. Other team members include: Residence Don, Residence Assistants, Security and House Council. This team is there to ensure a safe, fun environment that encourages academic and social growth. They can help you access campus and community resources, be a friend if you need to talk, work through room mate issues, plan fun and educational events, help with assignments - they are great and they are there to ensure students have the best possible experience.
Myth: Students can make their own meals in residence
FACT:
All students must participate in the meal plan, and what a plan it is: Jenkins Market Place is open from early in the morning until late evening. They serve a wide variety of healthy foods, grill favorites, fresh coffee and yummy desserts. Residence students can go to Jenkins as many times as they want during the day. Students can go for breakfast then return after class to sit in front of the fire place with a coffee and get some reading done. If you don=t feel like lunch at noon - no problem - go up in the afternoon and have a made to order grill item, a bowl of soup or a big healthy salad. This plan really provides tremendous flexibility and selection to NSAC residence students.
Myth: Students should take their laundry home because it is to expensive to do it in residence
FACT:
Residence students pay $30.00 a semester and have unlimited use of the large energy efficient machines located in the ground floor laundry rooms. All you need is soap and a lesson on how to sort your laundry - ask your RA , they will help you out.
Myth: Students don't need content insurance if they live in residence.
FACT:
The University does not provide insurance for personal belongings. It is strongly recommended students living in residence obtain ATenants Insurance coverage or ensure their parents have coverage contained in a home owner=s insurance policy.
Myth: Students must arrange for phone, cable and internet services in their rooms.
FACT:
NSAC residence fee include local phone, cable TV and high speed internet in each room. Students must provide their own connection cables and equipment. Students can arrange long distance services on their own.
Myth: Anyone can live in a NSAC residence building.
FACT:
NSAC offers both a traditional and a mature housing program. You must be registered as a full time NSAC student to live in residence.
Myth: Students living in NSAC residence are allowed to bring their pets.
FACT:
Students can have very specific, small pets that must remain caged in the proper cage size at ALL times. Any student wanting to bring a pet should review the pet policy to ensure compliance. Having a small pet in residence is considered a privilege not a right.
Myth: Students must pay to park their vehicle for the semester.
FACT:
Residence students must park their cars behind Chapman House - there is no charge for this service.
Myth: Residence buildings are made extra strong - therefore students can play sports in the buildings
FACT:
Residence buildings are susceptible to damage, just like your home. Playing sports in the building is not allowed.
Myth: Smoking is allowed in student rooms
FACT:
Smoking is prohibited in all buildings on campus. In fact, smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas. The designated area is located under the tree ( with the picnic table) in the horse shoe area of the residence complex.
