Undergraduate Program
Bachelor of Science (Agr)
The purpose of the Animal Science option within the B.Sc.(Agr.)
Degree program is to teach you the scientific and business fundamentals
of modern animal production systems. This will prepare you for
a range of careers including agribusiness, extension, consulting,
communications, farming, processing or marketing of supplies
and services. The program is broad-based, incorporating both
applied and analytical aspects pre-requisite to postgraduate
work or further professional training.
All aspects of animal production are covered, including those
animals which are raised for fur and fibre. The major focus,
however, is on food production, an area of animal science which
offers some special challenges. Contemporary issues in animal
welfare, food quality, biotechnology, biosecurity, sustainable
production practices and changing consumer demands are addressed
in the animal science curriculum.
Upper level courses taught in a modular format allow students
to take subject areas including companion animal genetics, organic
dairying, and care of sheep at lambing.
