Cropping Systems Research Program

The Cropping Systems Research Program was established in December 2000 with the appointment of Dr. V. Jelliazkov as a Cropping Systems Research Chair at NSAC.

Tthe goal of the Cropping Systems Research Program is:

(a) To improve economic and environmental sustainability of major cropping systems in Atlantic Canada;

(b) Introduce, evaluate, and develop new cash crops for Atlantic Canada, in order to boost agricultural sustainability by fostering development of value added processing and new industry development;

(c) Develop appropriate environment clean-up technologies for polluted agricultural soils and heavy metal polluted sites;

(d) Minimize the risk for farmers from adopting new technology and cropping systems through applied and basic studies, demonstrations, and dissemination of timely information.

The initiatives of the Cropping Systems Research Program will strengthen the development of the Atlantic region's agri-food industry into a knowledge-based economy. It will have significant input into development of environmentally benign cropping systems, in improving economic and environmental sustainability of agriculture in the region.
