Many students may be leaving siblings for the first time, check out some of these recreational activities that take place around the NSAC athletic centre and Town o Truro. Keeping communication and interaction ongoing throughout university years can be very beneficial for you, your student and their siblings. Here is a link which shows some of the events that take place at the Langille Athletic centre located next to the Cox Institute.

The Town of Truro has many parks, walking trails and groups that both your student, siblings and you can become involved in. Check out the Town of Truro web site to see what you can do on those weekend visits!
Spouses:
It can be challenging having a partner go back to school. You may have to consider a move, a stricter budget and a change in routine. Here at the NSAC we have an off campus housing web site to help orient you in Truro. Links to rental sites are available so you can begin the hunt for a new place to live.
If your partner/ spouse is a full time NSAC student, they will be automatically enrolled in a student health and dental plan with Gallivan Associates. If you or a child requires dental and health insurance you are able to opt into this plan for an added cost as long as you spouse remains a student. More information is available at www.gallivan.ca, healthplan@nsac.ca, or feel free to drop by the lower level of the dairy building to speak to the Gallivan representative.
The NSAC offers day care for NSAC students and staff. Check out their web site for registration forms, rates and contact information. http://nsac.ca/daycare/registration.asp
Returning to school can also pose many money questions. Student service provides information for mature students related to student loans. Heather Avery in student services will gladly answer any questions. As soon as you are interested in applying for a student loan it is best to talk to her to ensure things run smoothly. She is located in student services at the Dairy Building from 8:30-4:30pm.
Parents:
Parents have a very important role in their student’s success. As a new NSAC parent, your son/daughter may require your assistance in preparing for the school year. During the first few days of orientation, it is a good idea to visit financial services (link) with your child, student services and the Gallivan health and dental insurance representative.
The NSAC is always thrilled to answer questions you may have about your student’s studies. It is encouraged for you to be aware of the curriculum you student is studying as well as the projects and activities available to your student.
NSAC Confidentiality Restriction
The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP) provides for the protection of an individual’s right to privacy but also requires that certain records be disclosed upon request unless they are exempted from the disclosure. Applicants to NSAC are advised that information they provide along with other information placed in a student file will be used in conjunction with university practices for internal use and will not be disclosed to third parties except in compliance with the FOIPOP Act or as otherwise required by law.
What does this mean for parents? It means that we will be happy to assist you in any way we can, while maintaining the privacy of your son or daughter. Transcripts, admission decisions, course grades, and any other private information will be kept confidential and discussed only with the student. You will have to obtain any private information pertaining to your child from your child.
