Construction of NSAC’s rock garden began during the summer of 2002.
It was designed by Dr. Bernard Jackson and financed by The Friends of the Gardens.
Construction was done by members of The Friends of the Gardens and the school’s
grounds maintenance staff. The garden contains 450 tons of local red granite
and covers more than ½ an acre. It features a cactus
bed, dry stream bed, a cliff face, natural rock steps, a collection of dwarf
conifers and alpine and saxatile plants. The garden not only beautifys
the campus but also offer environmental horticulture students opportunities
to gain experience with uncommon plants. The garden also features two cedar
bridges constructed by students in the wood construction techniques course.
