Transition to Clear Garbage Bags
Effective January 1, 2012 the NSAC will be required to send all garbage to the balefill in clear bags.
To date, we have been acknowledged as one of the Balefill’s most compliant commercial haulers but this new regulation will bring more scrutiny of what we putting in the garbage. This in turn will require us to be even more diligent when sorting our waste streams. As such, we are asking for cooperation from you, the staff and students, to ensure that paper, cardboard, plastic and organic materials banned from the Balefill are not placed in the regular garbage.
Organics disposal is currently the biggest challange for us and in the coming days you will see additional tan organics collection containers placed in areas where food waste is generated; please make an effort to use them.
Clear bags are now in place in all buildings serviced by NSAC custodians. If any unserviced buildings require clear bags please phone your request to NSAC Physical Plant at ext. 4630. After January 1, any garbage in green bags or containing banned materials will not be picked up by the college garbage truck as they cannot be unloaded at the Balefill.
Please contact Tony Fleck at ext. 6662 or Phil Talbot at ext. 6663 with any questions or concerns.

Leaders of Today Presents Wild Spaces Grants
The deadline is fast approaching for the Wild Spaces Grants. This grant supports youth to connect with wild spaces close to their community by accessing a NS Protected Area (i.e. provincial park, hiking trail, etc.). Up to $3,500 has been granted from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment to connect youth (ages 14-24) to nature in their community.
If you and your friends have a great idea and want to get outside into Nova Scotia's wild spaces then this could be a great opportunity for you. Examples include: lead earth education activities in the outdoors, plan a hiking or camping trip for a youth group in your community, go snow shoeing or skiing in the winter, do some bird watching, host a plant identification workshop, do a trail maintenance project, etc.
Here's what you need to know:
- You must apply as a team. A team must include youth and supportive adults who want to work together to create a stronger, healthier, more diverse and inclusive community that welcomes and supports all youth.
- Youth must be involved in a meaningful and equal way (ie: be a part of discussions, decision-making, actions, learning opportunities and reflections).

NSAC Policy on Room Reservations and Provision of Security Services
NSAC facilities are used for a variety of activities, including academic classes, campus events, and events hosted by off-campus groups. Given the nature of our research activities and the equipment housed in our buildings, it is essential that appropriate security is provided for all activities in NSAC facilities.
In addition, Physical Plant must be aware of building usage so that they can schedule appropriate climate controls. The following policy provides guidance to the NSAC community on how to reserve rooms to ensure that the rooms are ready for occupancy and campus security is maintained. Room reservations must be made in accordance with this policy. Learn more...

Scholarship Spotlight

Joseph E. Mapplebeck Memorial Bursaries Presented
Cassandra McDonald, Milford Station, N.S., a second year Plant Science Technology student and Merrianne Ashe, Truro, N.S., a second year Diploma in Business Management - Companion Animal student, were selected as the 2011 recipients for the $500 Joseph E. Mapplebeck Memorial Bursaries.
The students are shown being congratulated by Mrs. Ramona Mapplebeck and Prof. Lloyd Mapplebeck, Plant and Animal Sciences Department, NSAC, and also a member of NSAC’s Scholarship Committee. Each year, two NSAC students are presented with the bursary in honour of Joseph E. Mapplebeck, who farmed for 50 years in Kings County, NS, and in recognition of his appreciation for the importance of a good education.
February 9 is National Sweater Day
Turn down your heat and turn up your sweater. WWF-Canada is calling on Canadians to turn down their thermostats and wear a fun sweater to symbolize their commitment to the environment.
This is a fun way to get NSAC faculty, students, and staff involved in a fun and simple event that raises awareness about energy conservation.
Student Poster Competition
Last year, the Margins/Canadian Farm and Food Biogas Conferences and Exhibition in London, Ontario started a Student Poster competition where students with research projects related to rural green energy and/or Biogas were invited to submit an abstract for consideration to present during the conference.
Last year this opportunity was only offered to students in Ontario but because of the great success, the opportunity has been opened to students from across the country.
This year’s conference takes place March 5 -7. More information about the poster competition can be found here.
