New Web Tool Provides Quick Link to Agriculture Programs and Services
A number of recent client satisfaction surveys conducted by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, including a 2010 survey in Nova Scotia, identified a need for improved access to information on agricultural programs and services. Ag Pal responds to that need.
AgPal is a one-stop, web-based discovery tool designed to provide clients with agricultural information on all federal and provincial programs and services.
This new online service for farmers and producers is a major improvement under AAFC's service excellence initiative, designed to support Growing Forward. AgPal is a collaborative effort between AAFC and the Department of Agriculture.
It's now easier to find agricultural programs and services information offered by government that specifically applies to the needs of your clients. You are encouraged to visit the AgPal website and become familiar with the program so that you can better inform your clients.
The service was launched on January 27, at www.agpal.ca
Nova Scotia is the first province to sign up as an early adopter of AgPal. All programs relating to the agriculture and agri-food industry offered to Nova Scotia businesses will be included in AgPal's database.
There will be more information on AgPal at both the AAFC and programs booth at a number of upcoming commodity meetings and trade shows.
Our internal lead on this project is Rebecca Sooksom. If you have any questions or comments as you explore the tool, please contact Becky at 893-5649, email sooksord@gov.ns.ca or Alan Grant at 893-6591 or email grantac@gov.ns.ca
Feedback on the functionality of the service can be sent directly to AAFC through the feedback link on the site.

A Rewarding Day for the NSAC Aquaculture Program at the Sea Farmers Conference
Friday marked the conclusion of the Aquaculture Association of Nova Scotia (AANS) annual conference, renamed this year as the Sea Farmers Conference (www.seafarmers.ca).
Shelley LeBlanc, class of 1997, was awarded one of three Ken MacLean Employee Recognition Awards. Shelley, the hatchery manager of Scotian Halibut, was described as one of the world leaders in breeding Atlantic halibut, and whose love for 'her girls' demonstrated the passion and pride behind the 'Sea Farmers' positive awareness campaign.
Dr. Cathy Enright, who in 2011 retired from her position as a Shellfish Professor, was awarded recognition by the AANS for her commitment to the association. Cathy, who has been an active member of the AANS since its inception in 1977, has never missed an annual meeting of the association.
As a testament to her generosity and support of aquaculture in Nova Scotia and to young scientists, Cathy contributed a scholarship to be awarded to the best student paper at the AANS meeting, valued at $1000.00.
Students enrolled in Nova Scotia universities as BSc or MSc students submitted an abstract for the competition. The top four abstracts were determined and presented their projects during the conference. The top award was shared between Jamie Fraser, an MSc student at NSAC studying under the supervision of Dr. Derek Anderson, and another MSc student from Dalhousie. Juan Manriquez, a MSc student studying under the supervision of Dr. Jim Duston and Dr. David Garbary (St.FX) also presented among the top four students. In all, 13 students submitted abstracts for the competition.
Congratulations to Shelley, Cathy and Jamie for their recognition at the Sea Farmers conference.
