Transition to Clear Garbage Bags
Effective January 1, 2012 the NSAC will be required to send all garbage to the balefill in clear bags.
To date, we have been acknowledged as one of the Balefill’s most compliant commercial haulers but this new regulation will bring more scrutiny of what we putting in the garbage. This in turn will require us to be even more diligent when sorting our waste streams. As such, we are asking for cooperation from you, the staff and students, to ensure that paper, cardboard, plastic and organic materials banned from the Balefill are not placed in the regular garbage.
Organics disposal is currently the biggest challange for us and in the coming days you will see additional tan organics collection containers placed in areas where food waste is generated; please make an effort to use them.
Clear bags are now in place in all buildings serviced by NSAC custodians. If any unserviced buildings require clear bags please phone your request to NSAC Physical Plant at ext. 4630. After January 1, any garbage in green bags or containing banned materials will not be picked up by the college garbage truck as they cannot be unloaded at the Balefill.
Please contact Tony Fleck at ext. 6662 or Phil Talbot at ext. 6663 with any questions or concerns.
Upcoming Alumni Events
A series of alumni events, hosted by Co-Lead, NSAC-Dalhousie Merger, Susan Spence Wach and NSAC's Vice President, Research, Extension and Outreach, Dr. Richard Donald, will be held in January and February.
The purpose of the events are to keep alumni engaged and informed of the merger process and to provide an opportunity for valuable input. This is your opportunity to ask questions and voice your concerns!

Message from the Work Well Team
Welcome to 2012!
I hope everyone had a happy holiday season with friends and family. January brings a new year and a feeling of renewal. There are many chances to turn over a new leaf, from trying a new food or recipe, attending a class or program that interests you or just making a change to a routine - maybe taking a different route to work. However you start your year, I wish you success.
James will return for our monthly cooking class. He will be preparing Tropical Chicken with pomegranate salsa, spinach salad, roasted potatoes and spiced carrots. I still have spaces left for that class.
We have a couple of new classes geared to help you get evening meals on the table fast and with little fuss, as well as ideas for getting the most bang for your dollar at the grocery store.
To start your new year off, here are four tips to make small changes. Try one per week to see how small changes can add up to make you feel great! I wish you all health and happiness for 2012. Hope to see you soon!
- Take the HALT Challenge the next time you think about eating. Ask yourself, am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired. If the answer is not hungry, food is not your solution.
- Warm up on a winter day. Fill your coffee cup with ½ chocolate milk and ½ white milk instead of coffee. Heat gently and have a calcium filled chocolate pick me up.
- Eat an extra fruit each day this week.
- Have pear or apple slices dipped in nut butter dip (mix nut butter with vanilla yogurt).
- Try frozen berries mixed with yogurt.
- Slice a banana into your cereal or oatmeal.
- Chop apples and grapes to add to salad.
- Feeling tired? Drink up. Dehydration is the number one cause of fatigue. Drink water or milk with each meal and have water between meals.
