NSAC Student participates in Canada Games Opening Ceremonies
Second year NSAC Environmental Sciences student Julie Vermeer, of St. Andrews, Nova Scotia was selected to take part in the opening ceremonies of the Canada Winter Games.
In addition to sailing over 10,000 nautical mile in the Picton Castle during the summers of 2006, 2007 and 2009 and the first leg of this current world circumnavigation voyage in the summer of 2010, Julie is a second year student at NSAC where she is the captain of the varsity women's A Woodsmen team. Originally from St. Andrews, Nova Scotia, Julie was raised on a dairy farm and her interests obviously reflect both land and sea. Whether Julie is competing in the standing block chop or stowing the royal before an approaching squall, he can be depended on to rise to the challenge. Her motivation to learn more and constantly improve her skills inspires the people around her. Julie's easy going nature and thoughtfulness make her an outstanding teammate and shipmate.
Julie's dad Mike is also an alumnus from the class of 1976 Congratulations Julie!

Where: Cox Institute 24
Panel Title: Wool: What is it Good For?
Panel Description: An estimated 50% or more of the wool produced in Atlantic Canada may be going to the landfill because the price is so low, often not even covering the cost of shearing the sheep.
The Canadian Co-operative Wool Growers (CCWG), Sheep Producers Association of Nova Scotia (SPANS), and a research team at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, the Rural Research Centre, and AgraPoint, are exploring potential new product development and value chains in wool in order to improve the abysmal wool price that sheep farmers receive. How can we have wool valued for the treasure it is? How do we get artisans, artists, craftspeople, the building industry, and the public involved in building a more sustainable sheep industry in the province, the region, and even the nation? One answer might lie in the wool batt, or batting.
For more information, please contact Deborah Stiles at dstiles@nsac.ca or 893-6705.
Panellists: Deborah Stiles, The Mathewsons of Upperbrook Farm, and Jonathan Wort, AgraPoint.
