Composting Workshop
On October 12, 2011 NSAC will be hosting a one-day Introduction to Composting Workshop at the Bio-Environmental Engineering Centre (BEEC), Bible Hill, NS. The workshop will be delivered by Dr. G. Price from the Department of Engineering and will encompass basic theory of composting, as well as current practices for the managing and troubleshooting composts. The workshop will begin at 9am and continue until approximately 2:30pm. Some hands-on activities will be included as part of the workshop.
Call for Nominations for Honourary Doctorate
The Honours and Awards Committee is soliciting nominations for an Honourary Doctoral candidate to be bestowed during Convocation in May.
These individuals will have made an outstanding contribution to agriculture as well as a significant contribution to scholarly activities; or who, by their example have made extraordinary achievements and/or service to society, provide inspiration and models of leadership and integrity to NSAC's student body.

Sheep and Beef Research Day
A Sheep and Beef Research Field Day will be held at the Nappan Experimental Farm on
Oct. 22nd.
In the morning, pasture and beef specialists, Bill Thomas and Les Halliday will review pasture species selection, management and impact on ruminant production, followed by scientific presentations on the sheep and beef pasture research being conducted at the Nappan Experimental Farm by NSAC and AAFC scientists. 2011 Blue & Gold Awards
On Nov. 4 come congratulate NSAC's alumni stars!
The Development & External Relations office is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 NSAC Blue and Gold Awards. The Blue and Gold Awards recognize alumni for their exceptional achievements in the areas of volunteerism and contribution to the agricultural industry.
Arch Cook (Class of '60) has been named as Distinguished Alumnus. Mark (Class of '05) & Sally (Class of '06) Bernard will receive the Young Alumni Achievement Award. The Alumni Volunteer of the Year award will go to Kara Irving (Class of '95).
On Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 the nominees will receive their awards at a gala held in Jenkins Hall. We hope you will come spend an evening with these NSAC alumni stars.

FCC Drive Away Hunger - Update
This is a quick reminder about the Drive Away Hunger Campaign. Bags for food can be found with your respective departments, house councils, or student unions. The FCC Drive Away Hunger Truck will be on campus
October 12th @ 3:00 in the Horseshoe. Please join us for the Offical Weigh In and show of support. Take a few moments this weekend to think about those in need, the number of individuals depending on food banks in Nova Scotia has risen 11 per cent since 2011. More than 16,000 individuals in Colchester County have used the Colchester Food Bank, according to the Colchester Food Bank website. Let's show Colchester County how much we care by delivering another successful Drive Away Hunger campaign.

NSAC competed in the ACAA Cross Country competition at the Universite Ste Anne on Saturday. The men's team placed second with Joost van Dijk being the top finisher for NSAC and the top NSAC runner was Vanessa Gerber.
United Way Fundraiser and NSAC Homecoming 5 K Walk
On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 the NSAC Athletic Department will not only be hosting the annual 5K Run, we are also hosting a 5K Walk!! The registration fee for the walk is $18 (includes a long sleeve T Shirt and refreshments) and the 5 Km Run is $25 (includes a long sleeve T-Shirt, awards for top 3 finishers in each category and a pasta meal) To celebrate the new walk event, $2.00 from every 5K Walk registration will be donated to the United Way. Interested in Discussing Social Issues? Want to understand new perspectives on the purpose of education? Work-school-life balance? Mental health?
Join your fellow students, staff, and faculty in discussions about a variety of social issues. Explore new perspectives, questions and opinions and engage with others in your quest for dialogue, understanding and/or connection.
The topic for Oct 12th is
Work-School-Life balance. The discussion may include a look at how people juggle work and studies with time to rejuvenate and relax outside of work; what struggles do people face in maintaining a healthy and holistic lifestyle while excelling at work?; is it possible to find meaning in the work? or wherever the conversation leads us!
Future topics may include stages of life, mental health, or the purpose of education among a long list of options that will be chosen together each week.

Robert France appointed to Committee
Robert France, Associate Professor of Watershed Management in the Environmental Sciences Department, has recently been appointed as the Nova Scotia academic representative on the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence Coalition on Sustainability. Dr. France has also been instated as one of five academics on the prestigious 12-member, Water Partner Advisory Committee for the Federation Water Stewardship Council to provide direct guidance to the Environment Ministers and Premiers toward “ensuring the long-term sustainable water use in Canada”. At the first meeting in Toronto in September, Robert spoke to representatives from across the country about several water-related research projects currently underway by his colleagues here at NSAC and he welcomes anyone undertaking such work to keep him informed so he can keep championing NSAC to provincial Department of Environment officials at future meetings
