Orientation Update
Hello all!
Our Orientation committee has met a couple of times to discuss events to give suggestions to our Students' Union representatives and our Student Co-Chairs. As the Chair and Co-Coordinator of the event, I am happy to announce that we are well under way with plans and confirming activities.
Our SU representatives, Paul Manning and Jessica Trudeau, along with our Co-chairs, Sarah Harding and Gaylynn Hill and Co-Coordinator Kaleigh Brinkhurst have been working hard to ensure that Orientation 2011 Expedition: Earth is informative and fun. This Orientation's theme is to reflect NSAC's core values of sustainability and eco-friendly practices throughout all of the events and materials used. Our team is working with NSAC Marketing to enhance the efforts being made.
A few changes to Orientation this year include combining International Student Orientation and Domestic Student Orientation, adding a Family Fun BBQ and Movie Night in Victoria Park, having Student Loans and Gallivan kiosks set up, Parent and Supporter Orientation, Special Co-Hort Orientation, Open Mike Night in the Pub (non alcoholic event), a soft ball game and meet and greet for Mature and Aboriginal Students with current students of these cohorts.
Our main events will remain, including Academic Orientation, Corn Maze, Shinerama Dunk Tank and Car Wash, Wagon Ride, Amazing Race and Bon Fire. Back by popular demand is our Alumni hosted Bale Sculpting contest, mud pit and BBQ! In addition, to better prepare our students, IT orientation will be mandatory again this year and Writing Centre/Library orientation will be strongly encouraged.
The Orientation "Team" welcomes suggestions and is working hard to ensure Orientation 2011 Expedition: Earth will be welcoming and wonderful for our new students and their supporters.
On August 19th, the Orientation Team welcomes staff and faculty to a noon-time BBQ in Alumni Gardens (weather permitting) as we would like to share the final schedule. We will change location in advance if the weather forecast determines.
All the best! Monica

Commuter Challenge 2011
Each year, Sustainable Alberta Association challenges work places and individuals across the country to find sustainable methods of getting to work during Canadian Environment Week, June 5 to 11: walking, biking, commuting, public transit, paddling, roller blading, to name a few.
This year, Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations is challenging all other government departments and agencies to participate, in support of Nova Scotia's 2020 Vision, which includes improving the air we breathe http://www.gov.ns.ca/nse/pollutionprevention/docs/2020FactSheet.pdf
It's easy! Just go to http://www.commuterchallenge.ca to register.
1. Scroll down to "Register as an Individual." Choose the province and city (the registration page does not recognize that one department can have many offices across the province).
2. Click "Next Step" and you'll see a drop-down list where you select your department. If your department is not listed, click "Back to login" and then "Register a Workplace." (You will need the number of employees in your department.)
3. When that is completed, proceed to "Register as an individual."
Now you can choose your own department. Remember your password. On June 5, start logging in daily to register your method of getting to work and the number of kilometers in your round trip. Working from home is considered a "telecommute" so include those days too! Results are calculated so you can see how other departments are doing-and round up more co-workers to participate!
We encourage as many people as possible from all over Nova Scotia to commute and register your results. Service Nova Scotia Municipal Relations thinks they will rise to the top....let's give them a run for their money! Demonstrate your commitment to our environment. Register today.

Please Help Zac Connolly!
You may remember Angela Connolly (Nee Dumas). She attended the NSAC from 2005 to 2008. She was blessed with a little boy, Zaccery in February of 2009. Angela was an inspiration to many at NSAC and was part of the AC family that we all hold close to us.
In May 2011 she received news no mother should ever have to hear. Zac was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, which is a cancer that develops from the nerve tissue. He has 3 tumors, in his neck, chest and around his bowels. The cancer has also infiltrated the majority of his bone marrow. He will be going through a full transplant of his bone marrow, as well as chemotherapy, radiation treatment and various surgeries. He will have to be flown between Halifax and Toronto many times in the near future for these treatments.
Please help this family; a family full of love and hope. They have a great family and friend support system, but can use help from their community as well. Any donation, both big and small, will be very helpful to the Connolly family at this time, as well as keeping them in your thoughts and prayers. This is a beautiful little boy who should never have to go through this. He is only 2 years old. Please do what you can for the him and his family. Visit the following website for more information on Zac’s condition and ways that you can help. http://helpzacconnolly.webs.com/

Ultimate Frisbee Club on Campus for Summer
As the season (slowly) turns to summer, it's time for the ultimate Frisbee club to start. This summer ultimate will be played Monday and Wednesdays at noon on the NSAC soccer field, weather permitting. The first game is planned for Wednesday, June 8.
For those unfamiliar with ultimate, it is a non-contact game where two teams compete to pass the Frisbee among players into a target end zone. Typically a short game of catch is played until 12:15 to allow players a chance to get ready and then the game is played until 1:00. This is open to all students/staff/faculty of NSAC, as well as members of the community.
No special equipment is needed and all levels of skill are welcome. The emphasis of this club is very much on getting active, having fun and social interaction within NSAC campus and community. If you have never played or heard of ultimate frisbee before, you will fit in with this group.
This club is designed to be "drop-in", so players can join at any time of the season and have the flexibility to play when time permits. Generally an e-mail list is made up to contact those people who are interested to play, simply to alert them to certain days when the field may not be available (due to weather or grounds crew maintenance).
If interested, please contact Mason MacDonald m2macdonald@nsac.ca or you can talk to Ashley Simms asimms@nsac.ca at the front desk of the Athletic Center.

Rick Hansen Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Man In Motion World Tour
25 years after his Man In Motion World Tour and in preparation for his 25th Anniversary Relay which will re-create the Canadian-portion of his original Tour, Rick Hansen is looking for help to cover the 12,000 kilometer trek across Canada - 7,000 helpers to be exact. One man in motion will be represented and celebrated by many in motion; as 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made their own difference in the lives of others will walk, wheel or run in the Rick Hansen Relay when it begins on August 24, 2011 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador and concludes on May 22, 2012 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
To find and recognize these participants, the Rick Hansen Foundation launched an online public contest at http://www.RickHansenRelay.com, inviting Canadians who have made a difference to enter to win a spot to participate in the Relay as a Medal-Bearer. Note for institutions in the Atlantic and Quebec regions that the initial public contest deadline is June 1st, 2011.
The Rick Hansen Foundation is asking our partners to help us spread the word, encourage Canadians to sign-up for the contest and promote the Relay on their respective web sites and networks.
