NSAC Open House 2011
Be Great. Do Good. NSAC Open House 2011 is Thursday, July 21 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
This year’s event is being built around the theme of being great and doing good. The NSAC campus community is full of people doing great things through research, teaching and community outreach. Faculty, staff, students and alumni go above and beyond for their communities whether in a professional capacity related to their area of expertise or in personal areas of interest - providing true learning that lasts.
More than 85 per cent of NSAC employees have volunteered at least once, within their area of work in the past year while more than 80 per cent have volunteered in either a community service organization, or in education.
Often described as quiet crusaders, NSAC faculty, staff, students and alumni are making a difference on a daily basis in their communities and to their environment - being great and doing good. This is something to celebrate.

Enrollment Management Office Update
High School Graduations
A big thank you goes out to all NSAC faculty and staff who attended graduation events the past couple of weeks. We are so pleased to have had NSAC represented at 23 school graduations this year. Attendance at high school graduations not only provides NSAC a chance to promote itself, but also an opportunity to get an early glimpse of outstanding new students who will be arriving in September. It's a great way as well to thank students for choosing NSAC as their university choice. We have students from around the region coming to NSAC this September who were Governor General Medal recipients and valedictorians at their high school graduations. A particular highlight was the presentation of 32 entrance scholarships at CEC's graduation last night. There are eight CEC students coming to NSAC this fall with 90+ admission averages - both of these figures are all time highs.
Thanks to the staff who represented NSAC at high school graduations this spring — Maxine MacLean, Mandy McDonald, David Barrett, Elaine MacInnis, Nigel Firth, Brian Crouse, Gillian Manley, Alisha Johnson, Colette Wyllie, Jim Goit, Marilyn Roberts, Janet Walker and Jeff Hoyle.
Update on Application Numbers
It's still been busy at the Recruitment Office with campus tours. Although it may seem late for applications for this September, several prospective students were on campus for tours this week. Applications continue to be received for this September. In the last two weeks, letters of acceptances were issued to 29 students. This week's application numbers report shows that we have received a total of 620 applications this year, compared to 640 last year. The good news is that students who have paid deposits for this September are 64 ahead of last year's numbers — a strong indication that both our new student class and our total enrollment will be strong again this September.

Animal Care and Use Committee – Vacancy and Summer 2011
Dr. Lyn Ferns has retired from her position as one of the two veterinarians on NSAC Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). Dr Ferns was a very dedicated, reliable and knowledgeable member of the ACUC who provided thorough and thoughtful reviews of proposals for using animals in research and teaching at NSAC. Dr. Ferns always had the well-being of the animal and the animal handlers as her number one priority. Her expertise and genuine interest in animal care will be missed! We thank-you for your dedicated service and wish you well on your new venture.
Reminder to all animal users, the ACUC will not hold meetings in July or August. Proposals submitted on new forms before the last week of August will be reviewed at the next meeting during the first week of September. The ACUC generally meets on the first Tuesday of the month to review protocols submitted to the ACUC Co-ordinator, Debbie Wynn dwynn@nsac.ca at least one week previously. New forms, standard operating procedures and new developments in animal care are located at http://nsac.ca/animalcare/.

New Procedure for Coursepacks and Class Handouts
This summer NSAC is changing from operating under an Access Copyright license to operating under the Copyright Act and AUCC’s Fair Dealing Policy to cover the copying (print and electronic) and printing of published works on campus. This change is necessary as Access Copyright has moved away from negotiating licenses and has applied for a tariff through the Copyright Board of Canada. The proposed tariff would be six times the cost of the previous license for NSAC and we, along with the other universities in Canada, are being represented by AUCC in a legal challenge of the proposed tariff.

Orientation Update
Orientation plans are moving along smoothly and the planning committee is meeting again on July 7th to finalize events. Kaleigh Brinkhurst, our orientation co-ordinator is busy completing the Orientation Pocket Guide for new students, our SU is working on event planning and welcome packages, our Shinerama Chair is working hard to complete plans for fundraising and Registry is making sure Academic Orientation will run smoothly. In all, the schedule is complete and our O-Leaders are excited to deliver a fun and informative event. The final schedule will be posted on the website, along with daily agendas late next week and Kaleigh and I will be securing the details for each of the events that are being planned. Again, this effort is a collaboration of campus and our new students will experience first hand the welcoming and helpful community we are.
One of the most exciting changes to Orientation is the combination of international and domestic activities. International Student Welcome will happen between August 31st and September 3rd and will dovetail into NSAC Orientation 2011 Expedition Earth on Sunday, September 4th.
As in the past, we are asking that all offices and services that were open on the Sunday that Orientation begins, be open again this year. As parents/supporters/spouses will be accompanying their student, it is important to have all of our services available to them on Sunday, September 4th. Offices should close at 3 p.m. as our Welcome session will begin at that time. Offices will be closed on Monday, September 5th and will reopen for regular hours on Tuesday, September 6th. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this request.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Monica
Campus Multifunction Devices To Have Security Improved
Multifunction devices that copy, print and scan our documents make work very simple. Campus' fleet management committee monitors these many machines to ensure these devices continue to simplify our lives and meet necessary security standards. As such, a team working for Xerox will be on campus over the next four weeks to improve the security features on these machines. Dave Estey will be leading the team and its activities. Please provide the access needed for this important work and feel free to ask any questions. You should see no change in the daily operation of these machines once the security improvements are in place.

Exceptional Student Service Advanced Connections Workshop
There will be an Exceptional Student Service Advanced Connections Workshop on either July 15, 2011 OR August 15, 2011 in Room #112, Haley Institute, NSAC. At NSAC we want our students to have an exceptional experience at every office or function they attend on campus. When students share with us that the service they receive on campus is less than exceptional, most often it is determined that the situation could have been resolved by improving how units communicate and problem solve together and how we interact with and respond to student day-to-day needs.
For more information click here
Please sign up for a session by July 8 by contacting Sandra Murphy, Enrollment Management Office, either by e-mail at smurphy@nsac.ca or phoning 893-7900. Space is limited so interested participants should sign up early.
