Turnitin at NSAC
NSAC has a campus license for Turnitin, an originality checking and plagiarism education and prevention service. The NSAC is using Turnitin to assist students with the development of their written materials, ensuring they use proper citation methods and maintain their academic integrity.
Use of the system by instructors is optional. However, if you plan to use Turnitin, instructors should include a note in their course outlines informing their students that Turnitin will be used in their class. Details on the service along with a link to the Turnitin policy at NSAC can be obtained at: http://nsac.ca/academics/ctl/turnitin.asp
The integration of Turnitin with our Learning Management System, Moodle, simplifies the use of Turnitin considerably. Linda Jack at the Centre for Teaching and Learning is responsible for administration of both systems and will be providing an orientation to the Turnitin/Moodle integration on August 31. To register for this session please go to: http://nsac.ca/academics/ctl/lunchbox.asp
If you have any questions about the use of Turnitin please direct them to Linda Jack at ljack@nsac.ca
Financial Advisor and New Students Coordinator
Hello Everyone,
It is my pleasure to re-introduce myself to you as Financial Advisor for Students and New Student Coordinator this year. During the past four years, I've worked closely with staff and faculty as the Senior Student Recruiter but most recently with the Development & External Relations team. I have always enjoyed working with campus to provide the best service to our future and current students. In my current role, I work closely with our Student Engagement team to ensure that the entire needs of our students are met.
As Financial Advisor to Students, I assist with the Student Loans process - internationally, federally and provincially, offer scholarship, bursary and grant advice to students and provide assistance to the Scholarship Committee, meet with students who have budgeting and financing concerns, manage an emergency fund for students and work closely with Registry and Financial Services.
As New Student Coordinator, I act as a liaison and offer guidance to students who are unfamiliar with our policies, procedures and services. As orientation to campus and on-going support to students is recognized as a priority of NSAC, it is my mandate to provide comprehensive and transitional advice to students who are coming to NSAC for the first time, whether they are directly from High School, another university or have been in the work force for over three years. I am responsible for communicating our services to students, including our Student Success Program, Academic Advising Program, Writing and Math Centre, Special Cohort Coordinator, Health Services, Students' Union, Career Services, Leadership Program and Athletics.
I always believe in having an “open door” policy and hope that you will recommend my services to your students. This semester I am offering additional office hours one evening a week, Thursday's from 6:00-8:00 pm. My office location, at this time only, will be in Jenkins Hall in the Lounge. Please encourage your students to make an appointment during this time if they are unable to make it during regular office hours.
I would like to have the opportunity to meet with your faculty to introduce myself and my new role in person and will contact you in the near future to make arrangements.
All the best!
Ashley Shepard

CANstruction Initiative
Have you heard about CANstruction? Teams get together every fall to build amazing structures using only cans of food. After judging, all the cans are donated to Feed Nova Scotia.
This year the departments of Agriculture and Fisheries and Aquaculture are on a Provincial team with other departments and they have an ambitious plan. They’re going to build the Great Wall of China! The event takes place on October 13th at the World Trade Center.
The Team needs you to donate cans of food to help them build the Great Wall. Any kind will do; all sizes are needed. Help our departments compete, win a category award and contribute thousands of cans of food for a great cause.
Starting this week there will be collection boxes at the Homburg Building in Halifax; Cumming Hall, Cox Institute, Haley Institute and Harlow Institute in Truro; as well as our Pictou location. Monetary donations are also required to purchase specific types of cans if you would prefer to participate in that way. Please help us help others in need!
If you have any questions about CANstruction speak with Chuck McKenna (424-6569) or Marshall Giles (424-3664) our reps on the Provincial team.
Sincerely,
Paul LaFleche
Deputy Minister of Agriculture
Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture

Change in date for AGRI1000 Agri-business Tour
The date of the mandatory agri-business tour for all students in AGRI1000 Agricultural Ecosystems has had to be changed from the date published in the calendar (Sept 14) to the next week (Sept 21). We ask that all faculty and teaching staff take note of this change. For some students, this full afternoon field trip (1:00-6:00) conflicts with other classes and the date is always published in the calendar in order to give other faculty "fair warning". This is so that they know those students affected should be given permission to attend without penalty. We apologize for this change in date.
Thank you for your understanding and help.
