NSAC Governance Transition Update
As you are aware, NSAC continues to be part of the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture and will be until the NSAC Act is proclaimed. NSAC's budget was contained within the Department of Agriculture budget as has been the case in the past.
We appreciate everyone's patience as we work through approval processes required to get to the other side. Unfortunately, it has been determined that there is more work to do before the proclamation can happen. Specifically, more time is required for government policy analysis, project approval and Board set up. However, a number of transition related activities under way will continue.
Many things will change when NSAC is a separate entity and no longer part of the Provincial government. One big change will be how the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) will impact NSAC activities.
Tomorrow, April 8th, Grant Thornton will be holding an HST orientation workshop for the Transition Manager’s Forum with Mark Singer, Principal-Tax Services. This session will begin the process of providing information to NSAC related to HST and will also collect questions from NSAC managers about the HST implications of specific circumstances and activities at NSAC. An information fact sheet will be produced and made available within NSAC after the session.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) will continue to be updated. These can be accessed at nsac.ca/governance. For further information please e-mail transition@nsac.ca.
Thanks for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Bernie MacDonald,
Co-President, VP Administration
Executive Sponsor, NSAC Transition
NSAC hosts a Barley party
As unique as the grain itself, NSAC students will participate in the university’s second annual ‘barley party’ Thursday, April 7th, 2011 when graduands will receive their official NSAC ring.
Launched last year, the barley ring, as it is affectionately known, provides students and alumni with a true symbol of the university, second only to the degree or diploma and immediately identifies the individual as a graduate of NSAC. Read complete article.

Update from Student Recruitment
It's an exciting time with student recruitment. Applicant numbers continue to be encouraging for September 2011. Particularly encouraging this week is the nice increase in students who have paid deposits at this point this year over last year. Application increases have been noted to the B.Tech. in Applied Science program, B.Tech in Environmental Landscape Horticulture program, the International Food Business program, the Diploma in Business Management - Equine program, the Integrated Environmental Management option of the B.Sc.(Agr.) and the Diploma in Managed Landscapes.
Special thanks this week go out to Heather-Anne Grant who accompanied Maxine to Dr. J.H. Gillis High School in Antigonish on Monday and to Jeff Campbell who took current package of NSAC promotional materials to his home high school in Kensington, PE.
This weekend Maxine will represent NSAC at the IB Conference being held at Park View High School in Bridgewater, NS.

Research Commercialization Webinar
The following Research Commercialization Webinar Course is offered FREE of charge by the National Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer (NCET2.org) in the USA. If you are seeking to understand what is meant by patenting, licensing, business start-up, etc, you should consider taking the course. I expect it is US-centric, especially Lecture 5 which is a US federal government program, but the content looks interesting and useful. Register online at https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/750397178.
Please forward to any undergrad and graduate students and post docs who you feel may be interested.
