Reclamation in the Alberta Oil Sands:
Big holes, big challenges, big myths.
DS Chanasyk, PhD, PAg, PEng
Renewable Resources
University of Alberta
Oil sands excavation and extraction have been conducted in
the Alberta Oil Sands for over 40 years, and continue to expand.
The excavation process is conducted on a mammoth scale, with
huge tracts of lands disturbed. Post reclamation, areas that
were originally dominantly wetlands have been turned into upland,
largely forested as an end land use. Recently the oil sands
operations have garnered much negative press. Key issues center
on huge tailings ponds, large water withdrawals from an already
low flow Athabasca River, few signs of reclamation success
and unparalleled greenhouse gas emissions. Each will be discussed.
The challenges of oil sands extraction and reclamation will
also be discussed, and several myths that have arisen re the
oil sands will be debunked.
Contact: Andy Hammermeister at 893-8037, ahammermeister@nsac.ca for information about the seminar.
