Nova Scotia Agri-Innovation Symposium

Farm producers, agri-businesses and researchers are invited to participate in the
Nova Scotia Agri-Innovation Symposium to learn about leading-edge techniques on how to adapt and grow your operation to improve your bottom line. Participants will learn from successful Nova Scotia farmers and agri-business operators some of the key elements that make their business a success. The event will also feature relevant information on government programs and services geared to help farm and agri-businesses be more profitable.
In this one day event you will learn about:
-the link between innovation and profitability
-how to overcome obstacles and barriers
-real-life, real-time success stories
-consumer trends and opportunities
-the importance of planning
-how to connect with research and business services
-networking opportunities
-federal and provincial policy and programs and services on science, innovation and research
Partners in support of the event include Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture, Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture and Nova Scotia Agricultural College. This event is a part of Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.
Advance registration is required by Friday, March 19. The $40 fee includes lunch and coffee breaks. Payment by cash or cheque payable to Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture will be collected on-site the day of the event.

Recruitment Update
Application numbers are looking very good at this point. Following last year when numbers ran on average 10 per cent higher than the year before, we are very pleased to report our application numbers are holding to last year's rate. Increases in applicant numbers over last year have been noted for Engineering; the Agricultural Business and Agricultural Economics, Plant Science and Environmental Science majors of the B.Sc.(Agr.) programs; and the Dairy stream of the Diploma in Enterprise Management program.
Chainsaw Safety Course
If you're thinking of getting a chainsaw but are a bit intimidated, or if you've got one and keep saying you should take a course so you can use it safely, this is your chance to learn how to safely operate the machine.
Our colleagues at the Department of Natural Resources are providing a course in Digby on April 24 and in Halifax on May 1.

Students are requested to bring their saws and safety gear to use for maintenance training and to see if they are up to code.
WUSC Coffee House Wednesday
The WUSC Fair Trade Committee has organized a coffee house on March 24 from
6 p.m. -9 p.m. featuring Juno winning blues singer Morgan Davis. The event is at Roadside Willies with all tickets sales going to the Breaking the Silence Fair Trade coffee farm who has recently had a large amount of their inventory stolen.
Tickets are $10 per person but they must be sold in advanced in order for the restaurant to be able to host the event. If 60 tickets are not sold by the end of this week the venue is cancelled and the coffee house, which is WUSC's major fundraiser, will have to be cancelled.

W.A.T.E.R. Symposium this Friday and Saturday
Are you concerned with water resource management in Atlantic Canada?
On March 26 and March 27, the inaugural Atlantic Canada W.A.T.E.R.* Symposium & Planning Forum (*Watershed, Assessment, Technology, Education & Research) will be held at NSAC. This symposium is being supported by NSAC, NSAC Department of Engineering, NSAC Research and Graduate Studies, NS Environment and NSERC.
The purposes of the symposium and forum are to bring together some of the leading scholars and practitioners of watershed management from across Atlantic Canada for the first, in what is hoped to be, a series of ongoing annual meetings. The symposium and forum will provide an opportunity for invited regional participants to share ideas, develop collaborative research partnerships with industry, establish a framework for enabling graduate students to present their research and to plan networks for acquiring strategic funding for future workshops.
Guest keynote speaker will be Timothy Ford, VP Research and Dean Graduate Studies, University of New England, Maine.
Other special guest speakers will include:

Rob Jamieson, Dalhousie University
Shawn Dalton, University of New Brunswick
Darren Bardati, University of PEI
