Anticipated Increase in "First Time" International Undergraduate Students in Fall 2010
We’re very excited to announce that we’re anticipating an increase in our "first time" international student numbers this coming fall. Although admissions are still being finalized we should have approximately 70 to 75 "first time" international undergraduate students. This compares to 57 last fall. These 70 to 75 students include:
- 50 to 55 students from the articulation with Fujian Agricultural and Forestry University (FAFU)
- Six to eight students from the articulation with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU)
- Four exchange students from the Czech University of Life Sciences
- Five exchange students from the Canada-EU Mobility Project (Sustaining Responsible Entrepreneurship: An International Experience)
- A number of other international "one of" students
Orientation preparations are well underway to ensure a smooth transition for these students into NSAC. In addition, Norman Goodyear, Dean of Teaching and Learning and Leanne French-Munn, Director, EM will be working with faculty and staff with respect to supporting academic services as we see this shift in cohort numbers.
Please contact Wayne Paquet (wpaquet@nsac.ca) or Mark Mason (mmason@nsac.ca) should you have any questions.

Can Poetry Save the Earth?
Don't miss out on an afternoon with writer John Felstiner as he reads from and discusses his book Can Poetry Save the Earth?
In his thought-provoking book, Can Poetry Save the Earth, John Felstiner explores the rich legacy of poems that take nature as their subject and demonstrates their force and beauty. In our own time of environmental crises, he contends, poetry has a unique capacity to restore our attention to our environment in its imperiled state.

The NSAC Smartcard System is expanding
The week of June 14th to 18th will see the Smartcard System integrated with printing and photocopying in student computer labs and the MacRae Library.
Some of the many benefits of the use of Smartcard technology to photocopy and print are:
- One card convenience.
- Enhanced printing security and job cancellation feature.
- New convenient web revalue option.
- Prepares the university for the future addition of other shops and services to the Smartcard System.
Some implementation highlights include:
- Same price for photocopying and printing as last year.
- Current Printing balances will be rolled into the new system.
- Photocopy card balances will be refunded.
Staff at the library will be communicating further on this refund process and on other issues such as research and faculty photocopy cards.
We are very excited about this new technology and thank you in advance for your patience during the implementation.
Please contact the IT Helpdesk if you have any questions at 893-6154 helpdesk@nsac.ca
This is a joint initiative of the Registry Office, IT Services and the MacRae Library.
Canada-Africa Research Exchange Grants (CAREG)
AUCC recently signed an agreement with the International Development Research Center for the management of the CAREG program. As part of this two-year pilot, IDRC aims to fund seven to eight grants worth a maximum of $40 thousand each. These grants will support short-term exchanges between Canadian and African universities as well as research institutes that address IDRC research themes, one of these being agriculture and the environment.
Successful applicants will have nearly 20 months to implement their project. African researchers are required to spend three to six months in Canada. Canadian participants are required to spend at least six weeks at the African institution. At the end of the two year program, AUCC will organize a workshop to review partners’ experiences through this pilot and make recommendations for a possible new phase of the program.
Any faculty or staff interested in applying are urged to submit their applications to NSAC International (nthornton@nsac.ca) no later than June 23rd for internal review. Those selected will be submitted to AUCC on June 30, 2010.
Please follow the links for the guidelines and per diem information.
