NSAC Button Pins
Who's ready for a little fun competition? NSAC wants to see who can come up with the best message that represents who we are! Be as creative as you can! The top finishers will have their messages used for our new button pin collection that will be making its debut soon! Keep it short and sweet. Your ideas can involve pictures as well. Have fun!
To help you out, here are a list of ideas we already have:

NSAC harvests vegetables to donate to local foodbank
Volunteers harvested vegetables from NSAC’s Community Garden foodbank plot last evening. A few personal plots were also harvested by those who generously donated their own items to the foodbank. The produce was delivered to the foodbank this morning!
This effort will be continued throughout the summer, into the beginning of fall.
We are still in need of volunteers for the garden. If you have any free time to lend a hand to help with the garden or with this specific project please contact Anna Rutherford at arutherford@nsac.ca or at 893-6619.
Pictured below is Meghan Summers and her daughter Ella. Meghan is a dedicated volunteer to the garden.

Below are the crates, designed and produced by the Community Workshop that NSAC had made for foodbank users to take home with their produce.

NSAC Orchard
The reorganization and renovation planting at NSAC's orchard has been completed as of June 25, 2010. The following trials are underway:
1) Haskap (Edible Lonicera) variety trial, four varieties
2) New hybrid lines of grapes, eight lines from AAFC-AHRC Kentville
3) New hybrid lines of raspberries, six lines from the same source
4) Strawberry variety trial with 16 varieties, a replication of the Province wide trial
5) The black currant mulching trial run by OACC.
Forty apples trees from the AAFC-AHRC breeding programme (from 1990s) are kept. The whole orchard is under organic management. For further questions/concerns please contact Dr. Kris Pruski at 893-6032 and/or Dr. Andy Hammermeister at 893-8037.

Recruitment Update
Since our last update, the Recruitment team has been working on some "behind the scenes projects" in order to prepare for another exciting recruitment season. I am currently working on our "Information Project", where I am updating all print and web-based materials for NSAC Recruitment. The Promotions and Recruitment Committee has been working diligently to ensure our materials are up-to-date and attractive. Thanks to those who have sifted through the paperwork and have submitted their edits.
In addition, Recruitment is launching new on-campus programming for prospective students that focuses mostly on having the students visit campus repeatedly throughout the year to encourage a sense of belonging to our community earlier in the recruitment process. We know through experience that the more time a prospective student spends on campus and the more people they meet along the way, the more committed they are to applying to NSAC earlier in the process. We are focused on giving personal attention to each prospective student we meet. Please have a look at our link to prospective students for more information. http://www.nsac.ca/prospectivestudents/recruitingevents/
Janet is working on Orientation 2010 with incredible energy. Plans are coming along and the committee has an abundance of wonderful ideas for our new students. The Orientation 2010 website is up and running and will appear on the front page of the website very soon! For a sneak peek at the site : http://www.nsac.ca/orientation/
Janet will also be heading to Atlanta Georgia to attend the Noel Levitz Conference on Student Recruitment, Marketing and Retention.
Ashley and Dr. Lori Parsons are in Calgary, AB, representing NSAC at the annual CVMA convention and will be hosting an Alumni event on Sunday, July 11th. We are excited with the prospect of meeting industry professionals and prospective students of the Veterinary Technology program. While Dr. Parsons attends sessions, Ashley will be meeting with prospective students and the general public to help promote our program.
Please remember that if you know a student who has just graduated and is "taking time off" or doesn't "know what to do" - we can help them! Call us 893-3432!
Nova Scotia Agricultural College Smoking Policy
NSAC is committed to providing a healthy environment for students, faculty and staff. Recognizing that exposure to second-hand smoke poses a serious health risk, smoking is prohibited in all NSAC buildings and in all outdoor areas except for those specifically designated as smoking areas.
Designated smoking areas can be found at the following locations:
1. MacRae Library (at the service entrance to the basement, facing Banting Building)
2. Harlow Institute (south side beside parking lot)
3. Haley Institute (grass area at east end between physical plant building and parking lot)
4. Cox Institute (gravel compound area next to Cox greenhouses)
5. Cumming Hall/Jenkins Hall (east side of Jenkins Hall beside the parking lot)
6. Hancock Building (northeast corner)
7. Residences (under Linden tree at west end of Horseshoe)
8. AgriTECH Park (in the quad across from the Administration building)
This policy is effective September 1, 2010. Maps showing the designated smoking areas on the main campus and at AgriTECH Park will be updated to reflect these changes.
Any questions, please contact Keltie Jones at (902 893- 6019).
Athletics Bike Program
We are in our first full season of bike rentals from the Langille Athletic Centre. The program was started to give students an additional recreational activity and an alternative to vehicle transportation in the absence of public transit in our community. We have 12 hybrid bikes, helmets and locks.
Students (with a deposit and appropriate signatures) can use the bikes for day transportation and recreational use with return before the end of the rental day. Also for July and August, students may sign out a bike for a weekend, taking the responsibility for replacement if the bike is damaged or stolen. The bikes must be returned before closing on Sunday.
For the remainder of July and August, we shall also be offering the opportunity for staff to use the bikes as well. Staff will be required to pay a rental of $5 for up to two hours and $10 for half day rentals.
