NSAC moving to new Learning Management System (LMS)
NSAC has supported the use of WebCT for the delivery of both on campus and online distance courses since the mid 90s. WebCT has been absorbed by Blackboard and unfortunately they will not be supporting the system after the end of this year. With the impending loss of support, an LMS transition team (Linda Jack, Norman Goodyear and Andy Kenny) were asked to investigate options for a new Learning Management System that could fulfill the needs for both on-campus and distance course delivery. After investigating a number of options, the selection team submitted a project plan to Senior Executive and has been given approval to move forward with the implementation of the new system, an open source system that is familiar to some of you, Moodle. The intent is to have a fully operational system well in advance of the start of fall semester, 2010.
To become familiar with some of the added features of this system, a demonstration site can be accessed at http://demo.moodle.net/. NSAC’s version of Moodle will have a different look but the basic features and operation of the system will be similar. As the migration of courses proceeds, instructors may wish to make changes to the way they have used the LMS in the past and incorporate the many new features on the Moodle system. However, we want to assure you that the current material can and will be transferred as seamlessly as possible. We will also be holding training sessions well in advance of the fall semester.
We are working on a contract with an outside consulting firm to assist us in setting up the new system, migrating existing courses, and to assist with training. Complete details are not finalized at this time but the implementation team is excited about the opportunities this new system will bring to campus.
We will be keeping the campus community up to date as details are finalized. Please watch the ebulletin for further communications on this exciting project.
