University Capital Launch Video

President’s List 2010
NSAC will honour its best and brightest on Wednesday, Feb.3at 6:30 p.m. as 122 student names are added to NSAC's President's List. This annual event recognizes students for their outstanding academic achievements from the winter and fall semesters of 2009.
To be named to the President’s List, students must be within the top ten per cent of their program of study and have a term average of 80 per cent or higher. Students must also be enrolled in four or more courses per semester.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this reception and help to congratulate our students while enjoying an address from NSAC alumnus and Masters student Corinna Taylor. Corinna attended the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December and will be speaking on her travels.

Sustainability Procurement Training
Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to adopt a Sustainable Procurement Policy. But what is sustainable procurement?
Research at NSAC Received Major Investment Boost in January
NSAC received more than $11 million in January in support of research and innovation.
Dr. Raj Lada and his team received $2.4 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund over a five-year period to aid in the development of Smart Christmas trees or “A” grade trees with all the desirable attributes and technologies to control needle drop.
Drs Claude Caldwell and Derek Anderson received $1.8 million in partnership with Genome Atlantic in an effort to help unlock the potential of Canada’s next oilseed.
Camelina (False Flax), known for its hardy growing nature and high oil content is the subject of a unique research project under Genome Atlantic linking researchers across Canada and as far away as Germany. The project received $2.8 million from the ACOA-Atlantic Innovation Fund; a significant part of its $6.1 million budget.
The university will also benefit from $7 million in funding from ACOA and the province of Nova Scotia for the construction of the Atlantic Centre for Agricultural Innovation at NSAC.

NSAC will celebrate its 105th birthday on Friday, Feb.12. Come help us celebrate this milestone at 3 p.m. in the upstairs foyer of Cumming Hall. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more details.
Nominations for 2009-2010 Teaching Award are now being accepted. The deadline for nominations is Wednesday, March 3.
Nominees may be full-time, part-time or sessional faculty members or technicians. Students, staff, faculty, and alumni may sponsor nominations. Nominations require the name of the sponsor and two supporting co-nominators.
The sponsor and nominee must provide the following materials (not more than 20 pages) in support of the nomination:
- A copy of your teaching dossier or relevant CV (max. 8 pages)
- A statement describing your contribution to teaching at NSAC (max. 1 page)
- A statement of your teaching philosophy (max. 1 page)
Any other supporting documentation, such as:

samples of innovative teaching materials you have prepared
- additional letters of support from peers or students you may wish solicit
- quotes or summaries from course evaluation forms
Materials should be addressed to The Secretary, Instructional Development Committee and submitted to the Registrar’s Office by Friday, March 26 or visit nsac.ca/idc to submit an online nomination at the Instructional Development Website.

Community Economic Development Funds Presentation
A Presentation on Community Economic Development Funds (CEDIF) will be held this week on the tax benefits and risks of investing in a CEDIF and the opportunity to invest in local companies.

International Development Week Presentations at NSAC
International Development Week this year is February 7-13. Watch for NSAC International's display in Cox to learn more about NSAC's involvement in international development activities. There will be two presentations for IDW this year:
Speaker: Kendra Mellish, former NSAC student, intern in Ghana
Thursday, Feb.4 from 11 a.m. - noon, Haley 116
Kendra will speak about her experience as an intern in Ghana with NSAC's Developing Rural Entrepreneurs Project. Hear tales of fire festivals, thieving monkeys and goats that want to learn. Her placement was funded by the Government of Canada through CIDA's Student's for Development Program.
Speaker: Jean McCardle, Senior Analyst for the Afghanistan Pakistan Task Force, Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)

Jean recently returned from a six month assignment with Task Force Kandahar, based at Kandahar Airfield. She will speak about Canada's development role in Afghanistan as well as specific projects that she was involved with on the ground.

Valentine's Flowers and Candy
RESPECT will be accepting donations for the Haitian Relief fund and in return you will receive a candy bag, or flower and candy bag, depending on the donation.
RESPECT members will be accepting donations as follows:
Valentine’s flowers will be delivered on Feb.11, either to residence or Students' Union (depending on the location of the recipient). Flowers will be sold on a first come, first served basis as there is a limited amount.
With a minimum donation of $2 you will receive a candy bag, while quantities last, and with a minimum donation of $3 you will receive a flower and candy bag.

Canard Conservation Fund Scholarships Presented for 2009
The Canard Conversation Fund provides scholarships to support students who are planning course and/or project work related to the environment or students conducting research work on environmental issues. Dr. Leslie MacLaren, NSAC Co-President, Vice President Academic, is shown congratulating students who received Canard Conservation Fund scholarships at NSAC’s Scholarship Banquet.
