2009 OH&S Inspection Results
I would like to take this time to thank you all for your assistance with the OH&S inspections for 2009. This is the first year all staff have been responsible for their own work areas. This gives us all the opportunity to be involved in our own health and safety and offers the chance to address concerns in the workplace.
The information from the inspections is available in the document below. Please take some time to review this document and ensure that the deficiencies are addressed by the responsible department. If these issues require a blue sheet, please submit one to Physical Plant.
I know we have been working on this inspection since last summer, if these issues have been resolved, please let Elaine Rector at Safety & Security know the completion date, this way they can be crossed off the list.
The required deadline for all deficiencies is June 30, 2010. At this time all issues should be resolved and reported back to Safety & Security.
Compass Group Canada (which is the parent company of Chartwells) has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2010. Fifty organizations across Canada were recognized on this year’s list. This is quite an accomplishment as a number of the employers on the list are not on the Top 100 list, which means that Compass was selected out of a minimum of 2,000 employers, if not more.
In just a few short years, Compass Canada has gone from little or no focus on this important initiative to this remarkable achievement. Under the direction of Laurie Brager, our Director of Sustainability, and the efforts of all associates across the country, we have earned the right to feel very proud of this recognition and honour.
Once again, Compass Group Canada shines as a Preferred Employer!

Congratulations!
Congratulations to Dr. Raj Lada on being presented with a Nova Scotian Crystal Christmas tree by the CTCNS Research Committee.
Dr. Lada's research received a lot of media coverage this past Christmas season and the university couldn't be prouder of him.
NSAC Researcher Receives AIC Sustainable Futures Award
NSAC's Dr. Chris Cutler is the first recipient of the Agricultural Institute of Canada’s Sustainable Futures Award. The award recognizes a young professional who shows great potential as an innovation leader, as an integrator and communicator and as someone who understands and supports the economic, environmental and social elements of sustainability.
Dr. Cutler is an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and has developed a highly-respected and innovative research program in blueberry entomology that addresses issues important to both the agricultural industry and the science of sustainable crop production.
The Sustainable Futures Award includes a cash prize to be used to support the recipient’s research and a complimentary five-year membership in the Agricultural Institute of Canada. The award was presented during the Atlantic Agricultural Forum in Truro, April 22.
Dr. Claude Caldwell Receives Accolades for His Teaching Methods
An open class of Agroecology was held at the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU) on March 15 by Dr. Claude Caldwell. More than one hundred teachers from 18 colleges attended this class jointly sponsored by the Overseas Education College together with the Registry Office of FAFU.
Agroecology is a national model course authorized by the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance in China. It is an introductory course with Canadian teaching methods from NSAC for the students of the FAFU-NSAC 2+2 program.
The open class was given by Dr. Claude Caldwell and Dr. Songliang Wang. Every teacher was greatly impressed with how Dr. Caldwell made his class lively and active. Many teachers think the model of the Agroecology course embodies the integration of two different teaching systems; the union of Chinese and Canadian methods is both very novel and attractive.

A challenge was issued to the Department of Engineering staff to pick up at least one piece of litter on-campus and dispose of it properly during Earth Day.
