Happy Earth Day!
While we aim to celebrate the Earth every day at NSAC, we've decided to do something a little more to mark the day. Join us at 3 p.m. near the Amphitheatre to help us plant a Red Maple tree.
Here are some suggestions for you to help mark the day:
Pack a litter-less lunch
Carpool
Walk or ride a bike
Shut off the lights for an hour (or more)
Wear 100 per cent cotton or clothes made from organic materials
Spend 15 minutes with nature (go outside for a break and journal what you see/hear)
Use reusable drink containers (no disposable coffee cups, fast food drink cups or bottles)
Commit to a paper-free work day (don’t print anything all day)
"One generation plants the trees, another gets the shade" ~Chinese proverb

OH&S Inspection Results 2009
I would like to take this time to thank you all for your assistance with the OH&S inspections for 2009. This is the first year all staff have been responsible for their own work areas. This gives us all the opportunity to be involved in our own health and safety and offers the chance to address concerns in the workplace.
The information from the inspections is available in the document below. Please take some time to review this document and ensure that the deficiencies are addressed by the responsible department. If these issues require a blue sheet, please submit one to Physical Plant.
I know we have been working on this inspection since last summer, if these issues have been resolved, please let Elaine Rector at Safety & Security know the completion date, this way they can be crossed off the list.
The required deadline for all deficiencies is June 30, 2010. At this time all issues should be resolved and reported back to Safety & Security.
Thanks,
Bernie

Nuffield Farming Scholarship
There is only one week left to apply for the 2011 Canadian Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust. Applications are due by April 30. Forms can be downloaded from the Nuffield Canada website at www.nuffield.ca
Nuffield Farming Scholarships are awarded to enthusiastic individuals, between the ages of 25 and 45, who wish to explore topics of their choice in agriculture, land management, horticulture or the food chain.
Three scholarships of $15,000 each are available for 2011.
"The Canadian Nuffield Farming Scholarship provides innovative Canadians with the funding to travel internationally to expand their personal horizons while exploring agricultural issues and opportunities in a global context," said Barry Cudmore, Chair and 2004 Scholar.
The scholarships are awarded to men and women who are judged to have the greatest potential to create value for themselves, their industries and their communities through the doors which will be opened and the opportunities provided for life-long learning and improvement. The scholarships are awarded on the strength of the applicants’ vision, enthusiasm and determination to pursue their farming goals.
A key part of the scholarship is the opportunity for winners to study a topic of interest to themselves throughout their travels. Scholars must complete their project within two years of the award and are required to travel and study for a minimum of two months in total. On return from their study tour, Scholars are expected to produce a written report and present their findings at the annual general meeting as well as to others in their industries.
Canadian Nuffield Scholars are also required to participate in the Contemporary Scholars Conference (CSC) where they will meet with scholars from other countries including the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and France to exchange ideas and experiences, and join a network of people who are at the cutting edge of primary industry. The 2011 conference will be held in New Zealand.
New Face On-Campus

A warm welcome is extended to Dr. Andrew Schofield, who recently joined Dr. Gefu Wang-Pruski’s lab as a post doctoral fellow. As plant physiologist and molecular biologist, Dr. Schofield obtained his PhD at University of Guelph in 2004. He has worked as a postdoc at University of Guelph and Dalhousie University in the past five years. Andrew brings extensive experience in plant postharvest physiology and plant molecular biology.
His work at NSAC will be mostly focused on validation of genetic factors related to tuber quality and disease resistance mechanisms in potatoes. As a native Nova Scotian, Dr. Schofield is looking forward to working with researchers and the campus community in large.
Welcome to campus!

She currently holds the position as President of Students’ Union, chairs the Students' Representative Council, is a member of the curriculum committee, member of library council, volunteered with the Career Fair, University Day and at the Writing Centre, and took part in one of the university brand splashes.
