Budget 2010
As you are aware, the Minister of Finance introduced the 2010/11 budget in the Legislature on Tuesday, April 6 and an e-mail was distributed to campus on behalf of Paul LaFleche on the effects of this budget on the Department of Agriculture.
While we continue to work to transition our governance structure in an effort to achieve more institutional autonomy and academic freedom, NSAC still remains within the Department of Agriculture at this time. As such, we are part of the budget process and affected by its constraints.
The 1 per cent budget target adjustment represents a reduction of $188,000 for NSAC which will be achieved through a combination of anticipated increased revenues and planned expenditure cuts as determined through the NSAC budgetary process.
For clarification, the changes announced to the Public Service Superannuation Plan (PSSP) applies to all NSAC civil service employees.
For more information or clarification, please contact Tricia Lake at 902-893-6034.

Sustainable Procurement Training
Nova Scotia is the first province in Canada to adopt a Sustainable Procurement Policy. But what is sustainable procurement?
“It means taking responsibility for the long-term impacts of our purchasing and consumption decisions. We need to take a holistic approach by considering the environmental, economic, and societal impact of the purchases we make. Ultimately, we want our purchases of goods, services and construction to be better for our environment, our economy, and our communities.” Procurement Services
As part of the roll out of this Sustainable Procurement Policy, training opportunities are being developed to educate users on the new policy and how it will support purchasing decisions.
- An online introductory course consisting of three interactive and informative modules is available at no cost to users. This course is mandatory for all employees who make purchases on behalf of the province. Registration online is limited to those with a government issued email address, and as such, NSAC employees must contact Lisa MacDonald in Procurement Services at 424-6571 to register.
The campus community will be informed as more training opportunities become available. For more information on the new Sustainable Procurement Policy, please visit the Sustainable Procurement website or contact Jenna Forsyth at jforsyth@nsac.ca or 893-6721.

Family Farm Campaign
Given the state of family farming in Nova Scotia and the need to establish a sustainable, safe and stable local supply of agriculture products, it seems appropriate to create an awareness of this in the public sphere.
Hundreds of organizations around the world are trying to get the UN to declare an International Year of Family Farming. Family Farming Campaign is looking for Nova Scotia support.

Leadership Banquet

University Leadership Award for a Club or Organization
The award recognizes a student for their commitment, time, energy and resources to making a difference and volunteering through the organization and development of a student club or organization. Connie McLellan, Students’ Union VP Student Affairs, is shown presenting Meghan Summers with this award.
Meghan is a fourth year Environmental Horticulture student who started up the NSAC Outdoor Adventure Club, was a lead on the Campus Sustainability Initiative (CSI) and helped create the Community Garden. Meghan was also the event co-ordinator for the Energy Awareness Week that took place in early March.
Earlier this year Meghan was nominated by Development & External Relations for the Special Recognition Award through The Village of Bible Hill for all of the volunteer work she does at NSAC. We are proud to say that Meghan was selected as this year's recipient.
Congratulations Meghan!
