We have implemented a change with applications so that both the student and the instructor are aware that the student is struggling in a certain subject area. We have also been advised that instructors wanted to know who was receiving tutoring in their class. By adding the instructor recommendation, we hope this will assist both the instructor and the student. The part concerning instructors is the instructor recommendation. Please see attached application for that part. Any questions and/or concerns, please contact Heather Avery, Special Cohort Coordinator at havery@nsac.ca or 896-2463.
*Please be advised, tutors will still need your recommendation as well to be able to tutor in that course. NSAC Tutoring Page is now available at nsac.ca/tutor Please check it out!
Sincerely,
Heather Avery

Testing Guidelines: Academic Accommodations
What Are Testing Accommodations?
For students with a disability, testing can be extra challenging to overcome because of problems associated with reading, writing, math, anxiety and/or other medical issues. Students receive testing accommodations if they provide the Special Cohort Coordinator with documentation, such as medical documentation and/or psychological-educational assessment. IFB Iceland Kick-Off
The second year of the NSAC-CAH International Food Business (IFB) degree officially commenced the week of August 23 with the program's annual orientation in Iceland. The Iceland program is a mix of classroom lectures and activities, team building exercises, industry field trips and sight-seeing excursions. The primary goals of the Iceland orientation are to reinforce the fact that the IFB program is truly an international program and to jump start the relationship building process among the international mix of students. A highlight of this year's program was an invitation to the Canadian Embassy in Reykjavik to visit with Ambassador Alan Bones.
Pictured below are IFB students and teaching staff with Ambassador Bones.

United Way Campaign 2010
The 2010 United Way Kick Off Luncheon is on September 15, 2010 at 12:00 at the Best Western Glengarry. This year NSAC and the Department of Agriculture will be recognized as we reached the Top Ten Workplace Campaigns last year. Congratulations everyone for your hard work.
Tickets for the luncheon are $10.00 - $100. for a table of ten. Please let me know if you would like a ticket or if your department would like to purchase a table.
It would be great to have a large delegation from the NSAC to show everyone how enthusiastic we are about fundraising for such a worthwhile organization.
Also, if you have any ideas regarding what we can do to raise funds for the United Way or if you would like to sit on the NSAC/NSDA Committee, please send me an email. It would be great if each building could do a fundraiser - for example - last year those in the Harlow Building organized a mini golf competition - a great idea and lots of fun.
Please let me know if you want a ticket for the luncheon and send me those fundraising ideas. Let's keep our Top Ten Status.

Support the students' commitment to Cystic Fibrosis research
NSAC is gearing up for an exciting few days in support of Shinerama! Shinerama is a nationwide fundraising event held at many universities and colleges in support of Cystic Fibrosis research.
2010 is the 50th anniversary for the foundation, so NSAC has set a goal of $3000 for the campaign. Today is Casual Day at NSAC. Find a collection box in your office area and contribute to the students' fund raising goal. Then later today come support the DUNK TANK at 2:30 between Cumming Hall and Jenkins. Come out and dunk some of your favorite AC faces in support of a great cause!!
Saturday is SHINE DAY and NSAC students will be at the Farmers Market from 8-12 doing various fundraisers including a sucker pull, cupcake sale, music and other great things. From 1-4:30 on Saturday there are also two car washes where you can get NSAC students to shine up the ol car! Locations for these are Classic Rentals in Truro, as well as the Bible Hill Fire Department in Bible Hill.
Also be on the watch for signs around campus advertising a cupcake sale next week and a theme day in the coming weeks!
Thanks in advance for your support

Environmental Sciences Technicians Deliver Short Term Training in Ethiopia
Anne Lelacheur and Anna Fitzgerald spent two in weeks June at our partner university, Jimma University College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, delivering hands-on training to nearly 30 staff and graduate students. Dr. Gordon Price from Engineering was also at JUCAVM delivering short term training in alternative waste management strategies.
At NSAC we pride ourselves in the quantity and quality of the hands-on training our students can access, but in developing countries this is much less common. At universities in developing countries, students seldom get the chance to practice using a lot of the standard scientific equipment. NSAC is involved in a CIDA-sponsored project to improve the capabilities of JUCAVM, including the setting up of a department of Post-Harvest Management. As part of this project, several pieces of analytical equipment have been or will be purchased and training the staff to use, maintain and trouble-shoot is part of what NSAC is contributing.
Anna had worked at JUCAVM in 2004, training in microscope maintenance and repair as well as general equipment repair. Anne has worked with several of the JUCAVM faculty who have come here for short term training. Anne’s knowledge of complex analytical equipment made her an excellent choice for the advanced training required as the new equipment arrives at JUCAVM.
Both Anna and Anne encourage other NSAC staff to consider becoming involved with international work. We found the trainees just crying out for the kind practical training that we use every day. Sometimes, when you’ve worked at something for a long time, it becomes so routine that you begin to think that you don’t know anything special. Well, if you want to feel special and valued again, try getting involved with international work!

Wireless Policy
NSAC's wireless network policy is meant to guide the deployment of wireless local area networking on campus to ensure reliable, compatible and secure operation.
NSAC's new Smoking policy is now in effect. NSAC is committed to providing a healthy environment for students, faculty and staff. Recognizing that exposure to second-hand smoke poses a serious health risk, smoking is prohibited in all NSAC buildings and in all outdoor areas except for those specifically designated as smoking areas. There are designated smoking areas at the following locations:
1. Library – at the service entrance to the basement, facing Engineering Building.
2. Harlow – south side beside parking lot.
3. Haley – grass area at east end between Physical plant building and parking lot.
4. Cox – gravel compound area next to Cox greenhouses (this area will be developed when the new greenhouse is constructed).
5. Cumming Hall/Jenkins – on the east side of Jenkins beside the parking lot.
6. Hancock Building – northeast corner.
7. Residences – under linden tree at west end of Horseshoe.
8. AgriTech Park – in the quad across from the Administration building.
A map depicting the designated smoking areas on campus is now available.
