NSAC Parking
NSAC faculty, staff, students and visitors have long enjoyed relative easy access to parking on our campus. Parking is free of charge and available to all.
However, as our enrollment continues to grow as well as the number of student commuters, parking becomes more problematic.
We ask for your patience and cooperation as we continue to monitor the situation. We remind all drivers to please abide by the NSAC Parking Policy and to forward any questions or concerns to Elaine Rector Safety & Security at 4190

NSAC Welcomes New Employees
Two new employees have joined the NSAC community this week.
Matthew Leight has joined the Print Centre as Account Associate. He is a recent graduate from the Graphic and Print Production program at Nova Scotia Community College. He began work as a temporary employee, but has now joined the team as a permanent employee. His primary role at NSAC will be to help meet the growing demand for print support and deliver on-site desktop publishing services.

Justine Gelevan has joined the Development team as Branding Assistant for a temporary nine month term. She has recently graduated from a Public Relations program at Mount Saint Vincent University. She will be working on several projects with the team including contributing to the E-Bulletin newsletter, coordinating photo shoots around campus and aiding in the communication of the NSAC brand.

NSAC Showcases Impressive Displays
A new institutional display has been created for use as a backdrop to NSAC presentations, conferences and tradeshow exhibits. Its dimensions are an impressive 10’x30’, designed to bring warmth and colour to existing displays. It pictures a bright blue sky over a field of barley. Barley has become one of the symbols of NSAC based on its importance to the origins of agriculture. The display has six individual panels that can be used as one large piece or separately. This offers flexibility based on available space and also to support multiple groups needing institutional display material on the same day. If you would like to use this new backdrop, it is available for borrowing through the Print Centre. Please contact Glenn at xerox@nsac.ca or 893-4737.
Garden Harvests Great Success
An estimated 500 pounds of produce was donated from all four harvests of the NSAC Community Garden and enjoyed by families around the Colchester area. The NSAC Community Garden was part of a greater branding initiative known as ‘brand splashes.’ These brand splashes are designed to engage NSAC staff, faculty and students in fun, community-based initiatives that show our stakeholders who we are and what we stand for. A portion of the vegetables harvested from the Garden were donated to the Colchester Food Bank. Fresh produce is a difficult commodity to come by when relying on donations, so food bank volunteers and clients, welcomed the donations with open arms.
Big thanks to Meghan Summers as project lead and all of the Community Garden members for their commitment of time and food, to this important community organization.
Other brand splashes have included the coffee giveaway last spring and snow stamping last winter. The goal of these and other brand events is to strengthen our internal sense of community, promote our work – and agriculture – as an important community building block and to give NSAC’s members a new way to make a difference in their world.
NSAC Graduate Student Orientation
Last Friday, NSAC's newest graduate students gathered for their orientation session. This included a welcome from both the Dean of Graduate Studies at Dalhousie University, Dr. Sunny Marche and NSAC's own Dr. Leslie MacLaren, Co-President and VP Academic. Our faculty and staff then gave presentations on their perspectives of the program, campus life, student services, NAGS, etc. Graduate Orientation provides a great opportunity for the students to interact with fellow students, faculty, staff while having a little fun. Since January, 2010, 35 graduate students have started our joint Dal/NSAC Master of Science program.
The Research and Graduate Studies Office would like to extend an official warm welcome to our new students. We wish you good luck in your program and we look forward to working with you all!

Urban Agriculture Symposium
NSAC is hosting an urban agriculture symposium September 24th and 25th in Truro and Halifax.
Planning Urban Agricultural, Systems for the 21st Century
Precedents, Practices, Prospects
The Symposium will bring together the leading scholars and published practitioners of urban agricultural systems for the first time in eastern Canada to synthesize and discuss the precedents, practices and prospects of this rapidly developing field.
Registration fees will be waived for NSAC students, grad students, faculty and staff members. For more information visit: nsac.ca/urbanagriculture
Note to NSAC professors:
Leading North American practitioners and published authors will be presenting their work at this conference. This is a unique opportunity for NSAC students to be exposed to world-class experts on a topic which futurists have identified as one of the ten most important of all emerging issues for the next decade. Already two courses here at NSAC (Contemporary Issues in Agriculture; and Introduction to Systems Analysis) in addition to several courses from the Dalhousie School of Planning will be sending their students to the conference. We strongly encourage other courses, particularly those dealing with business management, international development and environmental science, to likewise try to incorporate this opportunity to learn about interdisciplinary agricultural practice into their curricula. Given that the conference is funded in its entirety by the NSAC Research Office and the Department of Engineering, it would be a shame if as many of our students and faculty as possible did not take advantage of this learning experience.
