NSAC Awarded Canada Research Chair Valued at $500,000
Research excellence at NSAC was awarded with the presentation of a Canada Research Chair valued at $500,000.
Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe received a Tier II Canada Research Chair in fruit biochemistry and bioproducts valued at $100,000 annually for the duration of the term. Tier II Chair positions are tenable for five years and renewable once and are intended for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead in their field.
“NSAC is proud to be part of the Canada Research Chairs program and in particular of Dr. Rupasinghe and his leading-edge research,” said Dr. Richard Donald, NSAC vice president, research, extension and outreach. “Dr. Rupasinghe’s research is a key component of NSAC’s research program and contributes greatly to our ability to support, healthy, sustainable communities.”

Rural Research Centre Session
The campus community is invited to an end of year gathering at the Rural Research Centre(RRC) on Wednesday, Dec. 1st, from 2-3 p.m. Drop in at any point during the hour to have some holiday-themed, regionally-produced treats and catch up on research and other activities of the RRC folks! Departing staff and visiting researchers will be recognized at 3 p.m. and a 'brainstorming/visioning' session will take place with our Continuing Education colleagues from 3:30 onward; however, anyone interested in joining us for this latter hour of more structured catching up is welcome. Seminar
Roberto Novoa, Cuban veterinarian, will be on-hand Monday, Dec. 6th in Haley room 112 at 3 P.M. to discuss possible collaboration between NSAC and his institution, the University of Cienfuegos.

Scholarship Spotlight
Gail Semple Memorial Bursary Award
Dr. Ted Semple, presented Modou Camara, a student currently studying at Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) in PEI with a new bursary award. In memory of Ted’s late wife, Gail Semple (nee Johnson, Truro, NS), who had a strong commitment to animal welfare, a $1000 bursary is awarded annually to a student who has completed at least one year of AVC study at NSAC planning to study veterinary medicine or who were admitted to in the current year.
Applicants must be either currently or previously registered as a Pre Vet student at NSAC, or currently in the first year of the Doctor of Vet. Medicine program at AVC, having completed their Pre Vet requirements at NSAC. Selection criteria include financial need, academic performance and a background with demonstrated experience in animal welfare. The presentation took place at NSAC’s Scholarship Banquet in late October.

Winter Solstice Ball

The Office of Acadian Affairs, in partnership with Université
Sainte-Anne, is pleased to offer French courses in Greenwood, Halifax,
Petit-de-Grat, Truro, and Tusket. Acadian Affairs will cover the costs
for up to 245 Nova Scotia Government employees across the province
during the winter 2011 session.
The courses run for ten weeks with classes of 2.5 hours per week.
Accelerated courses of 50 hours (two classes X 2.5 hours/week) are
available in Halifax.There are day classes and evening classes. Details are indicated on
the attached registration form.
Classes start the week of Jan. 17, 2011 and end the week of March
21, 2011.
Registration forms must be signed by an authorized official and faxed
directly to Université Sainte-Anne. Time commitment should be considered carefully before registering. The employee is expected to attend at least 70% of the
classes or the employee's department/organization will be billed, by
Acadian Affairs, for the total amount of the course. Any cancellation not received prior to the second class will result in the employee's department/organization being billed, by Acadian Affairs, for the total amount of the course.
The student must indicate the course for which he/she wishes to register or indicate a need to be tested. Students who were enrolled in the summer or fall 2010 session(s) do not need to be tested and can register at any time, in person or by fax.
Université Sainte-Anne will confirm registration by email and arrange for placement testing, if required.

Call for Nominations for Friend of NSAC Award
It's time again to put forward nomination for the Friend of NSAC. Given out at graduation, the Friend of NSAC Award will recognize individuals or organizations from outside the NSAC community who have been instrumental in furthering the aims of NSAC.
The candidate should:
- be outside the college community - not an NSAC employee, student group or alumni organization
- be unpaid or if paid, receive a stipend rather than a salary
- been actively committed over a number of years
- made obvious contributions to the objectives and growth of NSAC
- not be eligible for other types of recognition (associate, honourary doc..)
- not be proposed just because of monetary donations by the candidate
Please send your nominations to the Honours and Awards Committee (Jim Goit at Jgoit@nsac.ca) before Christmas if you can so there is time for the committee to consider the nominations and prepare the citation.

Pension Information Seminars
Two pension information seminars have been scheduled for Monday, Dec. 6th in Cox 138, one at 9:30 a.m. and the other starting at 12:30 p.m. Both sessions will be presented by the NS Pension Agency and will provide standard pension information along with an overview of the Public Service Superannuation Act (PSSA). These seminars will be of particular interest to personnel eligible to retire in the near future; however, anyone with an interest is welcome to attend. If you have a spouse or partner who is also interested in accompanying you, please advise when you register.

Athletics
Yoga
Beginning Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, Athletics will be offering a drop-in yoga class every Monday at 5:00 P.M. for six consecutive weeks.
The yoga class will be open to all NSAC Students for free and any NSAC Staff for $5.
Please note that there is limited space for each class so we are not able to offer this program to the public.
If possible, please bring your own yoga mat.
