NSAC Governance Transition Project Update
The NSAC Governance Transition Project team is working closely with NSAC managers to separate our operations from the Department of Agriculture and ensure a smooth transition to a board-governed post-secondary institution.
The target date for NSAC to assume its new status is April 2011.
Team members are focusing on the legislated requirements for us to operate on our own, as outlined in the Nova Scotia Agricultural College Act of 2008. Between now and April the focus is primarily operational matters, related to human resources, information technology and finance.
Examples include making sure the NSAC has systems in place to run a payroll, manage separate benefits plans and produce its own financial statements.
The NSAC Governance Transition Project team recently developed a series of Q&A’s to help address any concerns you may have with the transition. Below is one example. The remainder can be found on the governance website at nsac.ca/governance.
When will a new president be hired?
The Transitional Board intends to hire an interim president in the next number of months to oversee the transition process over the next couple of years.
An abbreviated process is being developed now to identify and recruit potential candidates. There will be opportunity for input, as time allows, before a candidate is appointed. A permanent president will be hired once NSAC has a permanent board in place.
Sincerely,
Bernie MacDonald,
Co-President, VP Administration
Executive Sponsor, NSAC Transition
NSAC working to sustain the Christmas Tree Industry in Atlantic Canada
Christmas tree growing and exporting is a $100 million industry in Atlantic Canada employing 20,000 people. In the future, most of these trees may be NSAC created “SMART Balsams.”
NSAC’S Dr. Raj Lada, driven by a commitment to rural sustainability, is providing support and research to sustain the Christmas tree industry in the region. Lada has established the first, national Christmas tree Research Centre (CRC) at the Bible Hill university.
“The Christmas tree industry is being challenged by issues that, if unresolved, could result in a devastating loss of business and community in the Atlantic region,” explained Lada.
At the CRC, Lada and his team develop products and technologies to enhance needle retention as well as produce what they call a “SMART Balsam”, which epitomizes an ideal tree - full, sturdy architecture, unique fragrance, blue-green needles, retains its needles for up to three months or more and is pest free.

“Solutions need to be found to increase both needle retention and the public’s interest in purchasing a real tree instead of an artificial one,” he added. “If they are not, the Christmas tree industry in Atlantic Canada will surely suffer.”
Researchers at the CRC will study needle retention as their main focus to understand and intercept the hormone that triggers needle drop. They already know trees are susceptible to stress and are quite likely to drop their needles during stress and aggressive physical movements, some of which are regularly used in the selling of trees such as dragging, shaking, baling and transporting. They have also discovered that LED lighting with a certain wavelength spectrum can delay needle drop.

Career Fair 2011
Invitations went out last week to over 300 potential exhibitors for Career Fair. Local businesses, international companies, non-profit groups, experiential organizations and more were all invited! Most years we have between 40 and 45 exhibitors attend Career Fair, it is a great networking opportunity for our students as well as staff and faculty.
We encourage everyone to mark Jan. 12, 2011 on their calendar and plan to attend. Faculty: pass the word on to your students as well. If you would like a slide to insert in your slide show during the first class in January we will be sending those out in the next few days, or you can email me. For more info or to contact me, Rebecca at rveenuis@nsac.ca

We get so many compliments on the service our print centre provides. Glenn Desmond and Matthew Leights work very hard to ensure clients get the highest level of service. Since their employer, Xerox, tracks customer satisfaction levels for its employees, we thought we'd make sure all that positive feedback is heard.
We have created a 'Caught in the Act' form where you can share your feedback on the print centre's performance. So, next time you are thinking what a good job the print centre has done, go to http://nsac.ca/printcentre/cita/ and share! If you have any questions or concerns, contact Sarah Morris at 6527.

Hello from Recruitment!
As the holiday season approaches, recruitment is busy working on our prospective student database. With close to 500 prospective students and counting in our database we continue to communicate with them to book personal tours, come sit in on classes and our Student-For-A-Day event. Departments will be soon receiving a list of their prospective students to work with directly. All of our prospective students will be receiving an electronic flash holiday card from recruitment this year wishing them happy holidays and good luck on their exams in the new year.
This year we have had a larger amount of requests come in for classes to visit NSAC for a campus tour. This week we can add the O2 class from Middleton Regional High school to that list. Thank you Scott, Sherry, Audrie-Jo, Paul and Jason for your assistance with the groups. Your help is always appreciated!
Janet and Maxine are busy booking and attending parent nights, high schools fairs and independent visits right up until their holiday break. The ladies have done a fantastic job this semester on the road!
Holiday Door Decorating
This year the recruitment team has decided to create some friendly competition. We have each been given the task of decorating our office doors and need some judges. Stop by the Recruitment Office in Cox Room: 106 next week between Monday, Dec. 13th and Thursday, Dec. 16th to vote on your favorite door decoration! We look forward to seeing you!
Until Next Time....
