NEW HUMAN PATHOGENS AND TOXINS ACT
From the office of Dr. Richard Donald, VP Research, Extension
and Outreach:
Please be advised that a new Act was passed by Parliament,
effective June 23, 2009, entitled the Human Pathogens and Toxins
Act (HPTA). It is very important that all individuals who may
be responsible for activities involving human pathogens or
toxins, be aware of the new Act, and comply accordingly. Serious
criminal charges can be associated with the mishandling of
pathogens.
Please note that Risk Group 2 agents are restricted to use
in NSAC's Biosafety Lab, and Risk Groups 3 and 4 agents are
banned from use at NSAC. Toxins need to be evaluated individually
and their use is also restricted to the Biosafety Lab. Risk
Group designations can be viewed in the Act.
Dr. Glenn Stratton, Department Head, Environmental Sciences,
is NSAC's Biosafety Officer, and has been appointed as NSAC's
designate for overseeing all registrations and concerns in
relation to the new Act.
Please refer to the following web site to view the HPTA ~ http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/ols-bsl/pathogen/register-eng.php
IMPORTANT NOTE ~ Registrations of labs/sites MUST NOT BE CARRIED
OUT BY INDIVIDUAL RESEARCHERS- all such registrations are to
be coordinated by Dr. Stratton.
All queries concerning the Act and NSAC's 2008 approved "Biohazards
Policy for Research and Training" can be referred to
Dr. Stratton (gstratton@nsac.ca).
Thank you for your careful review of this documentation and
adherence to same.

One person with one solution won’t save the world. A
group of people making small changes can have a big impact.
NSAC is Idle-Free
NSAC has partnered with Drivewiser, a program of Clean Nova
Scotia and Conserve NS, to designate the campus as an idle-free
zone. Students, staff and visitors are encouraged to not idle
their cars unnecessarily. By shutting off our engines, not
only will we save on gas, we will reduce the amount of climate
change emissions released into the atmosphere.
The Facts:
• Idling more than 10 seconds wastes more fuel then
restarting your car
•
Idling produces more exhaust emissions than an engine in motion
•
Across Canada, idling engines account for 1.7 million litres
of wasted fuel per day
•
If Canadians stopped idling for just three minutes a day, we
would save 630 million
litres of fuel and 1.4 million tones of carbon dioxide emissions
