Second Annual Nova Scotia Mushroom Foray
During the weekend of Sept. 18, over 75 mushroom enthusiasts gathered in North River, Cape Breton for the second annual mushroom foray. Organized and sponsored by DNR, such forays will establish a data base of mushroom species in NS. The 2008 foray was the first in NS, and lead to the establishment of the Nova Scotia Mycological Society.
In spite of some showers on Saturday, the participants were enthusiastic and came back to the North River Community Hall with several hundred individual specimens which represented over 120 species. Expert mycologists were on hand to confirm identification. Samples of all the species were photographed and collection data compiled for the database.
On Sunday there were workshops on growing your own mushrooms, dyeing with mushrooms, a special trek gathering only edible mushrooms and the chef of the nearby Chanterelle Inn gave a cooking workshop.
NSAC was represented by several graduate students, faculty and staff. The photo below shows the graduate students enjoying the excellent food provided by the folks of the North River Community Center.
