Lecture by Malcolm MacGregor: Spring in Central Nepal- a Quest for Primulas
NSAC’s Environmental Sciences Department and the Nova Scotia Rock Garden Club are sponsoring an up coming public lecture from Malcolm MacGregor. MacGregor is currently touring North America to promote his book on saxifrages and lecturing on various alpine garden plants and their habitats.
His lecture Spring in Central Nepal - a Quest for Primulas is based on two different trips to this particular area. The lecture looks at three different areas of the Langtang National Park and the different flora found in spring. The talk has lots on primulas for which the region is famous, as well as rhododendrons, and corydalis, but due attention is also paid to the people and the spirit of the place.
The lecture will be held at NSAC’s Cox Institute in room 24, today at 1:30 p.m.

Do you Fancy Fungi?
Or know of students who have expressed an interest in fungi? Then you may want to enroll in Mycology, BIOL 2007, being offered this fall.
This course will focus on the beneficial roles that fungi play in nature, agriculture and industry. Their importance in recycling of organic and inorganic materials (composting, bio-remediation), enhancing plant vigour (mycorrhizae), controlling insect and plant pests (bio-control), and producing and processing of foods, nutriceuticals and pharmaceuticals will be covered. Growing (and cooking) specialty mushroom species (shiitake, oyster mushrooms) will be included. Course content may be altered to accommodate student interests.
If this sounds like a course you or someone you know would be interested in taking, please go to NSAC’s website and enroll today. This course is intended to be an alternate-year course, but without 10 to 15 students, it will not go ahead. Decisions about canceling courses are made by mid-August, so please don’t hesitate if you or some one you know are interested.
