Presentation by Dr. William Pickett:
Children and the Agricultural Work Environment
When: April 3, 10:30 a.m.
Where: Alumni Theatre
Dr. William Pickett of Queen’s University will give
a public presentation titled Children and the Agricultural
Work Environment: Building a Case for Change.
Dr. William Pickett is a Professor of Epidemiology at Queen’s
University in Ontario. He and his colleagues have an active
program of research within the fields of injury epidemiology,
pediatric health, and emergency medicine. One of Dr. Pickett’s
interests is the health and safety of children on farms.
Dr. Pickett plans to speak on his research over the last
15 years and give a summary of his team’s research
program on childhood farm injuries. All are welcome and
encouraged to attend. The presentation will be followed
by a short question and answer period. Click to view the

A public seminar on the topic: "Challenges and Opportunities
in Atlantic Agriculture" will be given by the final
candidate for the Vice President Research, Extension and
Outreach position. All are welcome to attend the following

All 2007/2008 collision and comprehensive assessments are
due on March 31, 2009. A late payment fee of $5.00 per vehicle
per month for both collision and comprehensive will be levied
for all payments received after this date.

A note to nonmembers:
We provide collision and comprehensive automobile insurance
to present and retired members of our two departments. The
organization was founded by a group of 18-20 employees of
NSDAM in 1963. We now have 360 members with 550 vehicles.
Our goal is to provide low cost "no frills" coverage
to our membership. Please contact me if you would like more
information.

Retirement Celebration for Randy
Ross
The Department of Environmental Science invites you to
a reception for Randy Ross, who retired the end of February,
2009. This celebration will be held in the Collins Building
on April 8, 2009, from 2:00-4:00 p.m.
Randy began his career at NSAC in 1980 with the grounds
Maintenance Department working as a Grounds Maintenance
Worker. Since then he has worked as the Turf Grass Technician
and finally, as a Co-Manager of the Grounds Unit in the
Department of Environmental Sciences.
If you wish to make a donation towards a retirement gift
for Randy, please drop off your donation to either Gisele
Mazerolle (Cox Institute) or Darwin Carr (Collins Bldg).

Face on Campus
Karen Dickie joins staff of Environmental Sciences
Department
Karen is a graduate of Olds College, AB. She received her
diploma in Horticulture with a major in Greenhouse Management
in 1995. Originally from Cole Harbour she settled in Truro
and has worked at the AC in various departments over the
years, including working as a supervisor on grounds maintenance.
Most recently she worked in the Department of Engineering,
providing technical support for Specified Risk Material
composting research. Karen is excited about joining the
Environmental Sciences Department and looks forward to working
in horticulture again.

Scholarship Spotlight

Farm Credit Canada Present Scholarship at NSAC
John Hutchings, FCC District Manager, Charlottetown, PEI,
is shown presenting the 2008 scholarship to Maryella Maynard,
Tyne Valley, PE, a 4th year B.Sc.(Agr.) Agricultural Business
student. Selection criteria for the award is based on academic
performance, interest and competence in farm management and
in the subjects associated with the economics of farm business,
interest and involvement in college and home community as
demonstrated by participation in organizations and affairs,
farm experience and financial need. Maryella was also the
recipient of an Atlantic Scholars Award - Fourth Year, valued
at approximately $9,200.
