We’re Looking For the New Face
of NSAC
Since we believe one person can make a difference, we want
to highlight NSAC students who are making a difference in
their community and the world.
Do you know a student who volunteers, or one who advocates
for a cause, or one who has created something innovative?
Let us know. Email Sabrina
McGee with the student’s name and a brief description
of what they have done, or are doing, to make a difference.
Deadline for nominations is February 13.
One student will be featured on the cover of our 2009-2010
academic calendar. Two others will be featured on the back.
Winners will be selected prior to February 23 based on what
they are doing to make a difference.
Please note that all nominations must be for students returning
to NSAC in the fall.
Health Services Offering Blood Pressure
Clinics
NSAC Health Services will be offering a Blood Pressure
Clinic for students in recognition of Heart Month. Clinics
will be held in Jenkins Hall on February 11 from 11 am to
12:30 pm, and in Cox Institute on February 12 from 8:30
to 10:30 am.
Public Seminars with Candidates for
Vice President, Research, Extension and Outreach
Public seminars on the topic: "Challenges and Opportunities
in Atlantic Agriculture" will be given by the candidates
for the Vice President Research, Extension and Outreach

Founding Day
NSAC turns 104 on February 14th! Staff, faculty and students
are invited to come celebrate the university's birthday
on Friday, February 13th at 3:00 p.m. in the main entrance
of Cumming Hall. Cake and refreshments will be served.
NSAC Excellence in Teaching Awards
Who’s your favourite instructor? NSAC students, faculty
and staff are encouraged to nominate a technical (lab) or
faculty instructor whose teaching has inspired, motivated
or challenged them—someone who makes learning come
alive at NSAC!
All you have to do is fill out a simple nomination
form on the web site by February 19, with a letter of recommendation
to follow by March 19. You’ll have the chance
to see their hard work recognized at Convocation 2009 when
the faculty and technician teaching awards are presented.

NSAC 2009 Internationalization
Award: Call for Nominations
Help recognize those who have made a difference to the
international initiatives of NSAC by nominating a colleague
for the 2009 NSAC Internationalization Award! Faculty, staff
and students, either an individual or a team, are eligible.
It doesn't take much of your time to do this and you'll
have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped recognize
the internationalization efforts at NSAC. Deadline
for nominations is March 9. For more details click

Canada Summer Jobs 2009
Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) is an initiative of the Summer
Work Experience program. It provides funding for not-for-profit
organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses
with 50 or fewer employees to create high-quality summer
job opportunities for students between the ages of 15 and
30.
The application period for Canada Summer Jobs 2009 will
be from February 2 to February 27, 2009. Application forms
and Applicant’s Guide are available online at:

Open Session with Co-Presidents
Faculty and staff are invited to attend another open session
with the Co-Presidents, Dr. MacLaren and Dr. MacDonald,
on Tuesday, February 24th at 3:00 p.m.
in Haley, Room 200. Topics to be discussed include governance,
the new Senate proposal, and various other campus initiatives.

New Staff Role in the Department
of Agriculture
Mike Johnson has accepted a new role as Director, Innovation
and Competitive Transition, beginning immediately.
Based in Halifax, Mike will play a lead role in the development
and implementation of the department's mandate on several
significant department priorities, including research, innovation

Scholarship Spotlight
First Presentation of $1,200 Kevin Grant Memorial
Scholarships
In memory of Kevin Grant who studied at NSAC from 1973-75
and graduated with an Animal Science Technician diploma,
two $1,200 scholarships were awarded to final year students
in a two- year technical program of study at NSAC. Selection
criteria include academic performance, leadership and contribution
to campus life, career plans and financial need. Mr. Jim
Goit, Executive Director, Development & External Relations,
NSAC, is shown congratulating the 2008 recipients –
on left, Amanda Molly, Port Alberni, BC, a 2nd year Veterinary
Technology student; and on right is Jon Raymond Dykstra,
Havelock, NB, a 2nd year Diploma in Enterprise Management
- Dairy Farming student. Jon was also the recipient of a
$4,000 Canada Millennium Scholarship, a $500 Atlantic Council
of Crop Life Canada Bursary, and the $200 Chuck Harrison
Memorial Bursary.
