NSAC Welcomes Diversity
The number of international students at NSAC has doubled
in the last few years, and faculty and staff are interested
in finding ways to assist these students with adaptation
to NSAC and to the local community. Julie Snair, Coordinator
of International Education at Acadia University, gave a
dynamic and engaging presentation to members of the NSAC
community on April 23, on the issues and opportunities caused
by a large influx of international students in a small community.
Acadia University went through a similar increase in international
student numbers in 2002-2005. Watch for another presentation
by Julie in early fall.

Swine Flu
As you are likely aware, four swine flu cases in Nova Scotia
have been confirmed by the Nova Scotia Department of Health
Promotion and Protection (HPP). HPP continues to advise
all Nova Scotians that there is no reason to be overly concerned
about this situation. At this point, the cases reported
in Canada have produced milder symptoms than cases in Mexico.
Still, we must be cautious as the situation unfolds. For
more information click here.
Upcoming Occupational Health and Safety
Courses
As you know, the Public Service Commission offers OHS courses

Recruitment Update
The recruitment office has been keeping a steady pace
these past few days. We've conducted several individual
tours, including a few from the states. Janet is busy entering
prospective students into our data base and organizing mail
outs to students who we have receive interest from zinch.com.
We were also invited by the Truro Rotary Club to Agri Tech
park for a youth leadership program for leaders in Colcehster
County high schools. It was a one day program that awards
annual scholarships to these students. Myself, Janet, Serena
Jackson, Amanda Greaves, Alicia Moore and Kendra Juurlink
participated, presenting several interactive activities
to the group. They had a great time.
Yesterday, we hosted 15 students from NSCC - Pictou's Adult
Learning Program on campus. They visited various departments
for a tour and program information. Thank you to those who
helped out with the tour.
Last week Monica participated in the annual EduNova Manager's
Retreat, hosted by CBU. Each Nova Scotia University, College,
Private High School and Private Language School was present.
Now at 25 members, the consortium travels internationally
to promote Nova Scotia as 'the" education destination.
As a member, NSAC has taken the opportunity to travel abroad
on funded trips. This year, EduNova is concentrating efforts
on three new International markets and continues to work
closely with ACOA, the Department of Education and the federal
government. Monica has been appointed Secretary to EduNova
Recruitment Committee and works closely with the Chair and
Co-chair.
After her EduNova meetings, Monica traveled to Toronto
to attend the Strategic Enrolment Marketing and Management
Forum. Ken Steele of Academica Group Inc. mentioned NSAC
and congratulated us for our constant growth. Monica reported
that this demonstrated the great strides NSAC is making
in Enrolment Management.
This week, Monica is working on the Newly Admitted Student
file and will begin coordinating a telephone campaign to
those students who have not paid their deposit. She is also
working on the itinerary for our upcoming trip to Maine,
Massachusesetts and Connecticut. During the trip we will
visit our FFA schools and meet with parents of new students.
Until next time,
Ashley
