New Automated Phone Greeting System for Campus - Date Change
In order to improve service to our clients, NSAC has upgraded
its switchboard to include an automated phone greeting system.
Beginning Monday, Nov.3, when someone calls the main
university number (890-6600) they will hear an automated greeting.
Callers are first prompted to press 1 for NSAC or 2 for NSDA.
They then have the option to enter the four-digit extension
or listen to a menu of NSAC departments and units. Please note
that you are not required to make any changes to your
existing
phone
system.
This new system will integrate seamlessly with our existing
system and will allow us to greatly improve our service. First,
callers will be able to reach a number anytime they need it.
Second, the automated greeting service has a greater capacity
to accept calls, which
means callers will no longer receive busy signals.
Occasionally you may get a caller who has reached you incorrectly.
If you receive such a call, please be patient and friendly
and redirect his or her call.
If you have any questions about the new automated phone system,
please call or e-mail Carol Adams (893-4272, adamsca@gov.ns.ca).

Recruitment Update
Happy Halloween from Recruitment!
Since my last update we've had a few changes in the office.
I'm pleased to say that Ashley Shepard will be with us during
the
year, assisting our director of EM, continuing the Leadership
Program and helping with some recruitment on-campus planning.
Since she has moved positions, we are currently seeking to
fill her recruitment position.
With the help of our ambassadors,
we are catching up on follow-up work with prospective students
that time sensitive. Thank You Kaylah, Mark and Katie! However,
we need to have a person in place to continue the work that
our third recruiter is responsible for. Please mention this
to anyone you might think would enjoy traveling to high schools,
meeting with guidance counselors and parents, advising our
ambassadors and maintain administrative functions on the
office. The position has been posted on Job Beacon.
Craig continues his travels this week in Halifax and had
a relatively successful week in Cape Breton while Ashley
traveled
through Newfoundland. Brian and Sandra worked hard to deliver
a very successful Awards Banquet. Well done! I spent the
week in Indiana, where the National Future Farmers of America
Conference
was held. Thank you Sandra for keeping all of our schedules
in order and the office flowing through these transitions!
At the National Conference, among the 55,000 high school
students, 300 agricultural exhibitors and agricultural universities,
we were well
recognized as the only Canadian school present. This was
our second year at the FFA convention and I am extremely
pleased
with the prospective students, parents and school advisors
I met.
Rebecca Harrison, one of our pre-vet students, accompanied
me to the Convention as she was one of the recipients of
the
American Degree, the highest achievement of any FFA student.
In fact, less than 1 per cent of FFA students (there are
over 100,000) are honoured with this award. The conference
is
unlike any
that Canada offers for young agriculture students and it
was a pleasure to be surrounded by students who have chosen
a curriculum
and eventual career in agriculture.
In terms of "hot leads", I have several prospective
students who are extremely interested in coming to NSAC for
all of the reasons Rebecca chose us over Cornell and several
other U.S. universities. Interests were very strong in three
areas: international food business, environmental sciences
and pre-vet.
Now, the key is to foster relationships with these American
students and I will be calling upon advisors and ambassadors
to help. Since we now have our FAFSA code (American Student
Loans), it will be much easier for American students to come
to Canada for post-secondary. This has been the obstacle
for at least three students last year.
This next week, we will be continuing to plan HSIP, host
Bring your Children to Work Day and work with our student
ambassadors
to offer personal tours of campus and begin planning our
biggest event, University Day! I will also be preparing for
my trip to Norway!
Until next time!
