Governance Bill Moves Forward
Bill No. 107, The Nova Scotia Agricultural College Act will
be presented at the Law Amendments Committee in the Red Chamber,
Province House, on Thursday, May 8, 2008, at 6 p.m. (or
immediately following the conclusion of business by the Subcommittee
on Supply, if later). This is the last step before third reading
and then royal assent.
Financial Services Summer Hours
Effective May 12, Financial Services will commence the summer
work schedule, closing through the noon hour, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
Financial Services will continue to open at 8 a.m. and close
at 4:30 p.m. daily.
Update from Recruitment
Recruitment activity is happening on a number of fronts today
and this weekend.
-Heather Hughes is presenting information sessions to grade
nine girls in science as part of Tech-Ploration being held
at NSCC, Truro, today.
-Ashley Shepard and Kaylah Jenne are participating at the
Career Day at Bible Hill Junior High today.
-Craig Curley is attending the FFA State Convention in Maine
today and as part of the program, is presenting two information
sessions at the conference being held at the University of
Maine in Orono.
-The staff of the Access Abroad Education Agency are representing
NSAC at an Education Fair in Coimbatore, India, today and tomorrow.
This education fair is sponsored by The Hindu newspaper. Brian
signed this agency to represent NSAC in southern India during
his recent trip there. Check out the agency at accessabroad.org
-Heather-Anne Grant and Kaylah Jenne will be attending the
Nova Scotia 4-H Weekend program on Saturday. Heather-Anne will
be promoting the International Food Business Degree and Kaylah
will be offering
campus tours to the 4-H members and their families.
-Paul MacIsaac and Jenny MacPherson are attending Aquaculture
Canada meetings in Saint John, NB, on May 11 - 14. They’ve
taken an NSAC display and will be presenting a poster presentation
on some recent fish nutrition work. Jenny will be doing a presentation
on her work with Arctic charr.
New M.Sc. Application Forms
Please note that the M.Sc. application forms and instructions
have been updated. The new forms and application instructions

New Employee Orientation
The Work Well Team has put together a comprehensive and
informative day of orientation for staff who have been hired
in the past year - June 2007 -June 2008. (summer students
not included). I want to encourage all new hires to attend
this year's orientation session.
An employee handbook alone is not sufficient to welcoming
new employees to their new roles. Don't be overwhelmed by
all the information there is to absorb as you get acquainted
with the departments and government processes and procedures.

Summer Research Photos
Now that classes are over, summer research activities
are starting to begin! The Research & Graduate Studies

Upcoming Retirement Reception
Hank Kolstee, supervisor of Land Protection Services,
and Bruce Curry, agricultural technician, are both retiring
after 35 years of service.
In celebration of their retirement
and contributions to the department, we are planning
a reception upstairs in
the CA Douglas Room and Foyer area of Cumming Hall on
Thursday, May 29 at 3 p.m.

Truro Junior High School Students Visit NSAC
Eighteen students from Truro Junior High School visited
NSAC on April 17, 2008 to learn about opportunities and
academic programs of the university. The visit, which was
hosted by Ashley Shepard from the NSAC Recruitment Office,
forms part of activities of Imhotep’s Legacy
Academy, an after-school mathematics and science program
for African-Nova Scotian students.
Dr. Victor Afari-Sefa,
a Post-Doctoral Fellow in the Department of Business and
Social Sciences, is Imhotep’s Legacy Academy Co-ordinator
in Truro and organized the NSAC tour. Imhotep’s Legacy
Academy is a university-community partnership co-sponsored
by Dalhousie University, the African-Canadian Services
Division of the Department of Education, Council on African-Canadian
Education, Office of African-Nova Scotian Affairs of the
Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage and Natural
Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Several
NSAC graduate and undergraduate students serve as volunteer
tutors/mentors at Truro Junior High School under this program.
During the NSAC tour, the junior high school students
were introduced to various activities on campus, including
the greenhouse cut flower program led by Prof. Lloyd Mapplebeck,
computer-assisted bridge design demonstration by Heather
Hughes and guided tours of the Aquaculture Centre and Ruminant
Animal Centre by Paul MacIsaac and Jean Lynds of the Department
of Plant and Animal Sciences.
