Mink Immunologist
Joins Department of Plant & Animal
Science
Dr. Andrew Dacanay has joined the Department of Plant & Animal
Sciences as industry research chair in immunology. Dr. Dacanay
arrived at NSAC in June 2008 from the NRC Institute for Marine
Biosciences in Halifax where he was looking at vaccinology,
infection and immunity in Atlantic salmon.
Originally from Leeds, West Yorkshire, England, Dr. Dacanay
received his PhD from the University of Aberdeen in 1999 in
Molecular Biology and Fish Disease. From there, he traveled
to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for a post-doctoral
research position before moving on to Halifax and the National
Research Council of Canada.
At NSAC, Dr. Dacanay will be working with the research teams
of Dr. Hossain Farid and Dr. Berni Benkel in a research program
to develop tools and technologies to help the mink industry
control or eradicate Aleutian Disease in mink.
Aleutian Disease (AD) is one of the most important diseases
in mink. The disease costs the mink industry millions of
dollars annually in testing and removing infecting animals;
severely
limiting both production and sale of breeding stock. As
Industry Research Chair, Dr. Dacanay will be specifically
looking at
components of the immune system response to AD infection
in mink.
Dr. Dacanay’s position is funded through the Government
of Nova Scotia’s Technology Development 2000 program
and the Canada Mink Breeders Association (CMBA). The CMBA
is a non-profit organization with a mandate to assist, protect
and advance the Canadian mink farming industry both domestically
and globally.

Hafiz has also has worked for national and international
research and consulting companies in Pakistan. He has research
experience
on hydrology, irrigation, drainage and mathematical modeling
components in different multidisciplinary projects. For several
years he provided services for various organizations in
Toronto prior to joining NSAC.
Hafiz is working with Dr. Peter Havard in his SWAT (Soil
and Water Assessment Tool) Modeling Research Program; and

Agriculture Research Program.

Academic Planning Session
This past Tuesday Alison McEachern was on campus to facilitate
an Academic Planning Session. The session began with a presentation
from Leanne French-Munn on Understanding Prospective Students
and Enrollment Issues. The large number of participants spent
the rest of the afternoon brainstorming new program ideas for
NSAC and then analyzing the ideas. A variety of interesting
ideas were generated that afternoon, and stimulating discussions
were had! The members took an active part in the process, and
the afternoon was very productive and successful. The program
ideas will be brought to the attention of the Academic Planning
Committee later this summer. Thank you to Alison and Leanne
and all those who assisted in preparing for the session, as
well as all the participants for attending!
Rob Gordon Leaves NSAC
Rob Gordon will be leaving NSAC to assume his new duties
as Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College effective August
1, 2008. Rob and his family will be leaving Truro for Guelph
in July so we are having a farewell reception on June 24
to say good-bye. Refreshments and cake will be served with
a cash bar for those so inclined.

Represent NSAC
The Enrollment Management Office is looking for volunteers
to represent NSAC at a number of high school graduations
throughout the region. We are anxious to be represented
at any high school graduation of students receiving entrance
scholarships to NSAC for this September. If you have personal
connections at a particular school and would like to attend
their graduation as an NSAC representative, contact Sandra
Murphy at 893-7900 or by email to see if there are students
from the school receiving an entrance scholarship and we
can arrange to have you attend on our behalf.
We are particularly looking for staff and faculty who would
be available and interested in attending graduation ceremonies
at Hants East, the afternoon of Thursday June 26, and at Hants
North, North Colchester and South Colchester the evening of
Thursday June 26.
Travel expenses are covered by the Enrollment Management Unit.
Occupational Health & Safety Training 2008/2009

There's Still Time to Register for the June 24 Session!
Develop Your Strengths and Learn New Skills with the Advance
Connections Program!
We believe everyone at NSAC has a major role to play in improving
and enhancing the student experience on our campus. We know,
from our students, that we need to improve in specific areas
if we want to maximize the student experience. Our students
have told us a lot of the issues with student experience on
campus can be resolved by improving how units communicate and
problem solve together, as well as how we interact with and
respond to the day to day needs of students.
The Advanced Connections program has been on our campus for
three years and is one of the leading quality service training
programs in North America. We believe the large number of faculty
and staff that participated in this program has made an enormous
difference to how we interact and serve our students. Due to
an overwhelming response Enrollment Management is offering
more Advanced Connections sessions this summer.
It is our hope that faculty and staff will prioritize time
over the next few weeks to participate in one of the quality
interaction and service training sessions being offered by
Enrollment Management. By bringing faculty and staff together
to interact and dialogue collaboratively about the quality
of our interactions and service towards students we are moving
in the right direction of improving life on campus for all
those who make NSAC their institution of choice!
About the Advanced Connections Program
Advanced Connections will allow participants to discover and
further develop their strengths in terms of dealing with students,
as well as determine areas where improvement can be made. Participants
will learn how to better work and communicate with individuals
across campus to provide a positive and memorable experience
for students. Most importantly, participants will be able to
take key messages with them that can be implemented and applied
right away. We can promise that all participants will find
the training session interactive, fun and extremely beneficial.
We have excellent facilitators lined up – our very own
faculty and staff.
