Upcoming Student Presentation

NSAC Animal Science student Amanda Mossman spent two months
in Jimma, Ethiopia, hosted by JUCAVM, Jimma University College
of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, as part of the Agricultural
Sustainability Project. She will be giving a presentation on "The
Role of Coffee Production in a Developmental Perspective" based
on her work for a Directed Studies in International Development
course, supervised by Dr. Raj Lada.
The Agricultural Sustainability Project is funded by the Government of Canada
through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Upcoming Diploma in Enterprise Managemet Seminar
Join students of the Diploma in Enterprise Management program
this Wednesday (Dec.3) from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m.. The seminar will
take place in the C.A. Douglas Room in Cumming Hall. Poster
and presentation topics include dairy, equine, farming and
companion animal.

Beverly Whidden Retirement
After 30 years and six months of dedicated service to the
Nova Scotia Crop and Livestock Insurance Commission, Beverly
Whidden, accounting clerk, is retiring at the end of February
2009. Bev's last day at
work will be on Friday, Dec. 12. In recognition of
her retirement, the Commission
and staff will be holding a reception in her honour at our
offices on the top floor of MacRae Library Dec.
12 from 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Please join us in wishing her all
the best as she begins her retirement.
Remaining Agriculture and Aquaculture
Wastewater Management Seminars
The Engineering Department has two remaining seminar sessions
on agriculture and aquaculture wastewater management.
Wednesday, Dec.3
Dr. Henry Zhu
Dr. Zhu is a candidate for the tier two Canada Research Chair
(CRC) position in wastewater management. Dr. Zhu has a B.Sc.
in Civil Engineering, a Master of Environmental engineering
and
Doctorate of Biological Engineering. His research
interests include new wastewater treatment technologies for
industry and municipalities, including a novel photo fermentative
hydrogen production from organic wastewater with photo reactor
design and co-culture systems. Dr. Zhu is currently a research
associate in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,
University of Waterloo.
Friday, Dec.5
Dr. Erin Smith
Dr. Smith
has been selected as a tier two wastewater management candidate
for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) position. Dr. Smith has a
B.Sc. Environmental Biology from NSAC, a Masters of Environmental
Science and a Doctorate of Environmental Management.
Her research interests include nutrient management, wastewater
treatment technologies, greenhouse gas emissions and environmental
farm plan, to name a few. Dr. Smith is currently a NSERC Post
Doctorate Fellow for the Earth Sciences department at St. Francis
Xavier
University.
There are also two upcoming seminars for an assistant professor
position in watershed management.

Cupboard

be closing
on Friday, Dec.
12.
Both locations
will be re-opening on Jan. 5, 2009.
Jenkins Marketplace will be open for regular cafeteria
services until Dec.16 at supper. It will re-open Jan.
4, 2009 for supper.
The Chartwells office will be closed from Dec. 20
until Jan. 4, 2009.
All catering services will be available as usual until Dec.
19.

Scholarship Spotlight
First Presentation of Jennifer Hayes Starratt Scholarship
Mr. Jim Goit, NSAC executive director of Development & External
Relations, is shown with the first NSAC student to
receive the $5,500 Jennifer Hayes Starratt Scholarship. Jaclyn
Mosher, Newport, N.S., a fourth year B.Sc.(Agr) Agricultural
Business student, is the recipient. The scholarship is awarded
to a female student entering the final year of the B.Sc.(Agr)
program. Selection is based on academic performance, leadership
and involvement in campus activities. Jaclyn also received
the $500 Patterson Law Prize.

The Student Services group recently held a half-day workshop
on international student needs. The workshop was led by Mark
Mason, international and exchange student co-ordinator. Lugene
Young and Mark spoke about their recent trip to FAFU and
the students they met who are working toward studying at
NSAC as part of the 2 + 2 program.
