2008-2013 NSAC Strategic Plan
The official launch of the 2008-2013 NSAC Strategic Plan took
place on July 31. The launch was very successful and the new
Strategic Plan was received well by all. The NSAC Strategic
Plan is a very important document for the university, and it
is important to use it as a guide for business planning. The
Strategic Plan is titled Renewing our Commitment and highlights
the mission, vision and commitments of the university as well
as areas of focus for 2008 - 2013.
The electronic version of the strategic Plan is available on the NSAC website
or by clicking
here. If you would like a hard copy of the NSAC Strategic Plan,
please drop by the Development Office in Cumming Hall.

NSAC Students Receive Recognition at Scholarship Luncheon
Twelve undergraduate students, many from the Truro area, were
honoured at a scholarship luncheon at Nova Scotia Agricultural
College (NSAC) on July 30, 2008. The students were awarded
prestigious Natural Science and Engineering Research Council
(NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRAs). These
scholarships provide undergraduate students with the opportunity
to work on a research project in the natural sciences and engineering
for 16 weeks. The awards are worth $4,500 each plus a university
contribution.
Students’ summer projects focus on research that addresses
problems for the dairy, mink, blueberry and environmental sector
as well as many others.
NSERC USRAs are given to students of high-caliber and are
meant to stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences
and engineering. NSERC Industrial USRA’s are similar,
but allow students to gain research experience in an industrial
setting by providing financial support through a host company.
The complete list of NSERC USRA scholarship winners:
Jennifer Hurford – Truro, NS
Darya Kryzskaya – Truro, NS
Megan MacEachern – Timberlea, NS
Tara MacLeod – Moncton, NB
Jessicca Mitchell – Truro, NS
Jessica Murray – Wellington, NS
Melissa Murray – Valley, NS
Dainis Nams – Tatamagouche, NS
Melissa Bezanson – Truro, NS
Sarah Davidson – Halifax, NS
Travis Esau (NSERC Industrial USRA) – Truro, NS
Jason Grant (NSERC Industrial USRA) – Baddeck, NS
Students at the luncheon also received an informative presentation
on NSERC student scholarship programs by Dr. Raj Lada, NSERC
representative at NSAC. Dr. Lada strongly encouraged the students
to explore the programs offered by NSERC and to consider postgraduate
studies following the completion of their undergraduate degrees.

New Faculty Graduate Studies Coordinator
Dr. Leslie MacLaren, co-president and vice president academic,
is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Raj Lada as NSAC's
Faculty Graduate Studies Coordinator, effective August 1, 2008.
Dr. Lada brings many years of graduate and post-graduate supervisory
experience to the position, as well as a strong background
in research. He is well known for his enthusiasm and support
of student research at NSAC, in part through his role as the
NSERC representative. As the faculty lead on the NSAC Graduate
Program, Dr. Lada will oversee the academic implementation
of the joint Dalhousie-NSAC M.Sc. program, including admissions,
consulting with students, monitoring their progress and serving
as a resource for students and supervisors. This is a one year,
renewable, appointment.
Please note that enquiries from students and supervisors should
still be directed to Marie Law, Graduate Program assistant
by e-mail or 893-6502. Marie
will be booking appointments with Dr. Lada for current and
incoming graduate students shortly.
Acting Associate VP Academic Continuing
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Dian Patterson has agreed
to continue in the Associate VP Academic role through the next
several months as the Co-Presidents continue to work on implementing
governance and other legislative changes. Dr. Patterson will
continue to work on academic responsibilities, including updating
the Academic Plan, following up on reviews and new program
implementation, as well as other international and academic
issues as they arise. Dr. Patterson can be reached by e-mail or
in Cumming Hall through Theresa Blois at 6720.

Bob Daniels Retirement and Donation to NSAC
As most of you will by now know Bob Daniels is retiring
at the end of the month after 33 years of service with the
Nova Scotia Agricultural College and the turf industry in Atlantic
Canada. There will be a gathering of colleagues, friends, and
family to recognize his time with NSAC in Alumni Gardens (if
poor weather, upstairs foyer in Cumming Hall) on Friday, August
15 from 2p.m. - 4p.m.
Rather than a gift Bob has asked that contributions be made toward some
lasting improvement to the grounds at NSAC. The Environmental Sciences Landscape
group has begun plans for placement of a new fountain as part of the redevelopment
of the area below the main entrance of the Langille Athletic Centre where the
grads enter for convocation. In the spirit of giving back, Bob will make his
own contribution to this exciting project.
You can send/bring, cash or cheque to the Development office, making note that
it is for the Grounds Improvement Fund on Bob's retirement. If you want to
make a credit card donation, just visit nsac.ca/donate and
follow the instructions to fill out the on-line form. Fill in the purpose section
on with "Grounds
Improvement Fund" and his name. A tax receipt will be sent out to you
in either case.
Congratulations Bob!

Cumming Hall Steps
The new front entry steps to Cumming Hall are looking wonderful
and should be ready for use by this coming Monday, August 11.
There will need to be some finish stone work done to match
the building, but this will be completed at a later date.
Langille Athletic Centre
The re-roofing project of the Athletic Center is in its final
stages. Atlantic Roofers have started this morning to remove
the gravel from the gym part of the Athletic Centre. If the
weather permits they hope to have the tar pot removed from
the site before September 1.
In Need of a New Workstation?
The Department of Plant and Animal Sciences has two large
workstations available - they are in extremely good condition.
