NSAC to Provide Three Student MMR Clinics
In an effort to keep you informed of the activities and services
being provided to students this fall, please be aware of
three upcoming MMR clinics being held in early September.
As you are aware, Nova Scotia has been experiencing an outbreak
of mumps. The majority of mumps cases have been in young adults
with almost 40 per cent being university and college students.
In Canada, people born after 1970 have likely received only
one dose of MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine, as a young
child. The National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommends
that students at post-secondary institutions should be offered
a second dose of MMR vaccine.
Therefore, students are invited to attend an MMR clinic at
NSAC (if you have not already obtained a second MMR from your
family doctor prior to the start of school). This is available,
free of charge, to students. Clinic dates and times are as
follows - first come first serve.
Sept.10(Monday) 1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m last names A-M
Sept.11(Tuesday)1:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m last names Mac-Z
Sept.12 (Wednesday) 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m everyone unable to
attend earlier clinics
For more information about the mumps clinics, please visit
our website at http://nsac.ca/health/mumps.asp

NSAC Wins Award for Wool Quality
The 27th Annual Atlantic Sheep Sale was held September 1st
at the Agridome in Bible Hill. This sale is the premier venue
for dissemination of quality sheep genetics in Eastern Canada.
Preceding the sale, shearer and NSAC alumnus Valdis Peterson
and the
Nova Scotia Agricultural College Sheep Unit were recognized
with a Certificate of Merit for Excellence in Wool Clip for
their 2006 wool consignment to the Canadian Cooperative Wool
Growers. This annual national award recognizes high quality
in shearing and wool management and was presented by CCWG Atlantic
Director Marg Zillig. This award demonstrates a commitment
to produce a quality product and requires diligence in maintaining
animals with a high quality of care, correct shearing technique
and fastidious fleece handling and packaging. It is a reflection
of the commitment to quality by the entire Ruminant Animal
Center Staff as well as the shearer. Congratulations to the
team!

Marg Zillig (R) of the Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers presents
the annual Award of Excellence in Wool Clip to shearer Valdis
Peterson (L) and NSAC Sheep Unit Manager Gillian Fraser (M).
NSAC Business cards
NSAC has developed a new template for NSAC business cards
to be consistent visually with some of our new corporate identity
items. The process of ordering stationery items may change
in the new future. An online ordering system is currently being
explored which, if adopted, will make ordering materials easier
for the end user and improve the overall consistancy of the
end product.

In the interim, all business card orders can be made through
Sarah Mossis at smorris@nsac.ca or
by phone at 6527. Sarah will co-ordinate the production;
departments will continue to pay for the printing. Please
forward all pertinent information
to Sarsh along with an account number for processing. Please
see the above example for the new template.

Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (FFN):
A new undergraduate
course is offered this Fall at NSAC
Although the concept of FFN has been around for centuries,
functional foods and nutraceuticals (FFN) is the new frontier
of agriculture, agri-food and nutrition. Recently, the concerns
and interests in FFN have mounted because of consumers’ changing
attitudes towards wellness and prevention of chronic diseases
through a healthier diet. Interest in “food as medicine” continues
to increase globally among the research, educational, and industrial
sectors.
Considering above facts, Dr. Vasantha Rupasinghe, Assistant
Professor of the Department of Environmental Sciences has developed
a new course (FOOD 3001-A) to review the rapidly expanding
FFN industry and newly emerging value-added and designer food
concepts. Lectures will cover numerous aspects of FFN, including
definitions of FFN, the global marketing trends and regulatory
aspects around FFN, biochemistry, efficacy and current understanding
of the mode of action of selected bioactive compounds.
Guest speakers from Dalhousie University, AAFC and Health
Canada will cover the current scientific evidence of health
benefits of selected FFN, current and future market trends
of FFN, and federal government regulations on FFN. Field visits
include modern bioactive extraction facilities at PEI-Food
Technology Center and research using in vitro model systems
of human disorders at the newly established Institute of NutriScience
and Heath (NRC-INH). The hands on experience from laboratory
sessions and mini research project on determination of antioxidant
capacity and bioactives will contribute to the breadth and
depth of FFN exposure.
