NSAC's Marketing and Communications
Website Launch
NSAC’s marketing and communications team is working
to develop a Marketing and Communications website. The site
will provide you access to useful tools and information about
NSAC’s marketing, public relations, alumni relations,
development and web services. It will also provide you with
information on the many marketing and communications services
we provide, such as our graphic standards, media and web policies,
key messages and more. For the next few weeks, there will be
an article in each edition of E-Bulletin that will explain
different tools you will find on the new site. If you have
any questions about the concepts presented to you over the
upcoming weeks, please contact Sarah Morris at 893-6527 or
Stephanie Rogers at 893-7247.

Career Fair ‘07
Bankers, landscapers and researchers are only a few of the
professionals who will be taking part in the 12th Nova Scotia
Agricultural College (NSAC) Career Fair. The fair takes place
October 3rd at the Langille Athletic Centre on the university’s
Bible Hill campus.
The one-day event provides an opportunity for NSAC students
to talk to representatives from government departments, farm
organizations and other agencies involved in the Atlantic agri-food
industry.
The NSAC Career Fair will help to broaden students' definition
of agriculture and the kinds of careers associated with it,” said
Sharon Oakley, NSAC Career Fair Coordinator. “It’s
important for students to have this chance to talk with people
in different areas of employment and to learn what they can
expect when they graduate.” The Career Fair provides
a window to the real world.
High school students are also encouraged to visit Career Fair ‘07
as it provides an excellent opportunity to learn about the
innovative programs of study offered by the university. NSAC
is a specialized university that cultivates learning and research,
focussing on improving and sustaining our environment for the
health and well-being of society.
Career Fair ‘07 is open from 10:00 a.m - 3:00 p.m., Wednesday,
October 3rd and the public is invited to attend.

The Stone Canoe | Two Lost Mi'kmaq Texts
by Elizabeth Paul & Peter Sanger, with illustrations by
Alan Syliboy
October 2007 | Literary Criticism | $29.95 CAN | $26.95 US

This is a story about two stories and their travels through
the written record. The written part begins in the mid-nineteenth
century, when Silas T. Rand, a Baptist clergyman from Cornwallis,
Nova Scotia, took as his task the translation of the Bible
into Mi’kmaq – the language of the indigenous communities
in the region. In the process of developing his vocabulary,
Rand transcribed narratives from Mi’kmaq storytellers.
Until recently, it appeared that none of the early transcriptions
in the original Mi’kmaq had survived. Then, in 2003,
poet and essayist Peter Sanger uncovered two manuscripts among
the Rand holdings in the library at Acadia University in Wolfville,
Nova Scotia. At the heart of The Stone Canoe are the two stories,
including Rand’s published versions, along with new translations
and transliterations by Elizabeth Paul, a Mi'kmaq speaker and
teacher of the Eskasoni First Nation. Both are among the earliest
examples of indigenous Canadian literature recorded in their
original language; the 1847 transcript being perhaps the earliest.
Their publication in The Stone Canoe makes a significant contribution
to our understanding of Mi’kmaq storytelling and indigenous
Canadian literature. The book also includes illustrations by
Mi'kmaq artist Alan Sylliboy.
Author Biographies
Elizabeth Paul was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. She grew
up and presently lives in Eskasoni, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Paul is one of the most prominent
and active figures in Mi’kmaq language studies. She received a B. Ed. in
Elementary Education from the University of New Brunswick in 1984 and since then
has been engaged in formal Mi’kmaq language training as an instructor,
language consultant and curriculum developer. She has frequently taught Mi’kmaq
at Cape Breton University, St. Francis Xavier University and St. Thomas University.
Peter Sanger has published seven collections of poetry, including Earth Moth
(1991) and Arborealis (2005), a collaborative project with photographer Thaddeus
Holownia. His recent prose work includes White Salt Mountain: Words in Time (GP,
2005) and Spar: Words in Place (GP, 2002). His most recent publication is a collection
of poetry entitled Aiken Drum (GP, 2006). Sanger has been the poetry editor of
The Antigonish Review since 1985. He lives in South Maitland, Nova Scotia.
Alan Syliboy was born in Truro, Nova Scotia. His interest in the visual arts
developed while he was still a child. Through his grandfather and his grandfather’s
friends he learned something of traditional Mi’kmaq craftsmanship. Later,
Syliboy's talents as a painter and printmaker were encouraged by the Mi’kmaq
art teacher Shirley Bear. Since the mid 1970s Alan Syliboy’s paintings,
drawings and design work have been recognized as a unique contribution to Canadian
cultural life. In 2002, Syliboy was recipient of The Queen’s Golden Jubilee
medal for artistic achievement.

Hello from Recruitment
Over the past week, we've been working hard to complete several
tasks. By now, you've noticed our new print materials and
hopefully had the time to look through the view book. This
new strategy has been created to help students and their
supporters shop for the right program at NSAC. We're in the
last stages of editing our "family" view books,
in which a student can look through the choices of programs
in their field of interest.
In addition to this work, we've been working on our guidance
counselor mail-out. This is the second mail-out that we're
sending in this cycle of Recruitment. Thanks to our student
ambassadors, we are on time and ready to go!
Please don't forget about HSIP and that we've had over 120
students attending within the four days. We need your help
in offering one of the most popular events that any of the
Atlantic universities host. Ashley will be in contact with
you to confirm your participation.
Finally - a report from the road: Craig, Ashley and I have
been traveling to the Halifax area with the AARAO tour. We've
had a great response from students in the past few years, and
the momentum continues. We're heading to the Pictou area next
week, as well as Bermuda and St.John's NF.
Until next time,
Monica
