Marketing & Communications Website Highlights:
Web Standards Manual
NSAC’s Web Standards exist to facilitate consistency,
usability and to promote standardized branding across
our university's websites. University branding
allows visitors to recognize a web page’s affiliation
with NSAC, therefore it is essential in order to maintain
a consistent image. The Web Standards Manual includes information
on NSAC's web template, writing for the web and how to best
present visual images. To download a copy of the manual, please
visit nsac.ca/development/marketing/policies/web.asp.
If you have any questions about the Web Standards Manual, please
contact Mike Pauley at mpauley@nsac.ca or
893-6038.
For the next few E-Bulletin editions, you will find an article
introducing different tools you can find on the new Marketing
and Communications website. The next article will discuss NSAC’s
Templates. If you have any questions about any of these new
tools, please contact Sarah Morris at 893-6527 or Stephanie
Rogers at 893-7247.
NSAC's Highway Signs
Mayor Bill Mills, the Honourable Brooke Taylor, Minister of
Agriculture, and Christine Blair,
Chairwoman of the Village of Bible Hill, came together last
Friday for a photo with NSAC's new highway signs.
In July 2006, NSAC entered into negotiations with the Town
of Truro and the Village of Bible Hill to look into the possibility
of signage on the Province's 100 Series Highways leading into
Truro and Bible Hill. The signage would serve the dual purpose
of promoting the two communities as well as the location of
our university within them.
The Town of Truro, the Village of Bible Hill and NSAC made
joint application to the Department for Community Identity
Signs. The purpose of the joint application was to promote
NSAC and show a true spirit of cooperation between the Town
and the Village.
After much negotiation, design concepts were approved and
three community identity signs were produced and erected in
September. The sign pictured here is for northbound traffic
on Hwy 102 and the other two signs will be for eastbound and
westbound traffic on Hwy 104.

Healthy Workplace Week
To celebrate Healthy Workplace Week, the Deputy Minister has
asked staff to nominate one or more coworkers for the Considerate
Coworker Award.
Congratulations! We have had a great response, with 61staff
being nominated. Winners will be notified by receipt of a "Considerate
Coworker" certificate
from Deputy Paul LaFleche. Also, on Monday we will randomly
draw names (out of the coworkers that were nominated) to win
a prize!

Agricultural Ecosystems Class Tour
Students in the AGRI 1000, Agricultural Ecosystems, class
visited the new NSAC Atlantic Poultry Research Centre during
their lab last Wednesday afternoon. Students were touring the
facility as a part of their studies on animal agriculture systems.
They are becoming familiar with the life-cycles, production
methods, feed resources and the overall energy flow associated
with animal production systems in converting crops to nutritious
human food. In order to accommodate the strict biosecurity
measures for minimizing the potential transmission of disease,
all 139 students had to complete a Visitor Biosecurity Questionnaire
and don disposable overalls, gloves and boots before being
allowed to enter the layer and broiler units. The meat processing
area and the feed mill were also toured.
Course instructors Dr. Claude Caldwell and Shannon Kilyanek
and all the students would like to thank Lana Crewe, Ron Mekers,
Mike McConkey, Sarah MacPherson and Crystal Fullerton for
all the work they put into preparing for the class and conducting
the informative tours.
The class is looking forward to touring the Dairy, Sheep
and Aquaculture units on Wednesday, October 31.

Hello from Recruitment!
Over the past few weeks, campus has been busy with recruitment
activity. We’ve hosted East Antigonish High School,
Warwick Academy from Bermuda, welcomed the Tech Ed Teachers
Conference and prepared for HSIP. Off campus, we visited
CEC, Auburn High and select schools in Northern New Brunswick
as independent visits.
Craig and Brian represented NSAC at
the Future Farmers of America National Conference last week.
As the only Canadian school invited, NSAC had a great opportunity
to meet with students already fitting our typical student
profile (50,000). Thanks to Sarah Morris, Brian and Craig
were able to host a uniquely Nova Scotian event! I’m
anticipating great results from this trip!
Ashley concluded
her visits to Cape Breton and Craig and I wrapped up the
schools in the Halifax area. So far, our prospective student
interest is quite marked and we are happy to keep up with
the momentum built over the past few years. As we’ve
been entering information into our prospective student database,
I’ve been following up with the students via
e-mail and have personally invited them to on-campus events,
the first being HSIP. Our formal invitations are being mailed
this week.
I’d like to extend a huge thank you to Mark
Schooten, a fourth year student in Plant Science for his
volunteer work. Because of Mark, we’ve been able to
keep up with hundreds of mail-outs. Colette Wyllie (second
year Environmental Sciences) came to CEC to talk about her
experience as a local NSAC student and impressed upon the
two classes
the value of staying in Truro for university.
I am most pleased to report a very successful meeting with
the Recruitment Promotions committee held last week. The
table was full with representatives from each department,
including Julia Lindsay from Continuing and Distance Education,
Erin MacPherson from Research and Graduate Studies and Sarah
Morris from Marketing. The meeting focused on joint efforts
in recruiting and promotional materials.
This week Ashley
is off to PEI and I’m heading to Dalhousie for a Research
and Graduate Career Fair. Craig will be in the office following
up with his contacts made at the FFA convention.
For now,
Monica Sani
