Techsploration
Techsploration is a not-for-profit organization with the goal
of increasing the number of women working in science, trades,
technical and technology related occupations by assisting young
women from diverse backgrounds to explore a wide range of career
options in these fields.
Techsploration is a three-part program that includes career
research, the opportunity for young women to share experiences
with their classmates and Techsplorer events.
The organization is currently looking for women at NSAC in
these fields to act as role models for girls in Grades 9-12.

The NSAC Alumni Association needs your help
NSAC alumni are doing wonderful things and we want to know
about it. Many of our students leave our university campus
and accomplish
great things, travel to exciting places and achieve success
in a variety of different capacities. We are proud of them
and want
to acknowledge them in our alumni publications, through our
website and more.
As their former teachers, mentors and friends, you are the
best ones to let us know who to contact. Do you know someone
who has
won an award, done good things for their community, has a unique
job, received a patent? We want to know about it. Please forward
along any suggestions to alumni@nsac.ca.

New Knowledge Campaign
for Royal University of Agriculture, Cambodia (RUA)
From a distance, we can contribute to a change
in Cambodia. The changes we can help make
will shed new knowledge, new thinking, a new approach, and,
in fact,
build
a
new generation
with a new vision. If you are interested to participate in
this campaign, all you need to do is look at your book collection
(basic sciences, humanities, agriculture, engineering related).
If you have duplicates
or ones you feel you don't need any more, please
drop it in the box kept at Cox 151 marked "My Gift for
RUA." I know it's difficult to part
with a book, but I am sure that, for a good cause, it can be
done. These books will be taken
to RUA during our next few missions. If you do not have time
to come to Cox to drop it off, please let me know and I will
come and collect it.
Together, we can contribute
to a good cause. For more information or clarification,
please Raj Lada at 893 2309 or e-mail:

Aquaculture program field trip
From September 14-16, students enrolled in the aquaculture
program enjoyed a three-day field trip of commercial aquaculture
sites
in Nova Scotia.
This annual event has become a highlight of the program, where
all students enrolled in Aqua 4000 (Finfish
Production) are obliged to participate and any other interested
students in the program have the opportunity to take part.
Students are encouraged to take at least two trips during
their program.
Other trips
include
a
circuit of southwestern New Brunswick and a circuit of northern
New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and northeastern Nova Scotia.
This year’s trip around the South Shore personified
the state of the aquaculture industry in Nova Scotia. The students
were exposed to wonderfully diverse species production and
innovation. Friday’s visits included a blue mussel grow-out
and harvesting site and a scallop grow-out site. The students
enjoyed fresh, raw scallop meats (what a treat!) thanks to
the site manager (an NSAC Aqua. alumnus). On Saturday, the
students toured a red abalone farm, a trout processing plant,
a marine
plant production site (our host was another NSAC alumnus),
and a halibut grow-out and broodstock/hatchery site (each managed
by NSAC Aqua. alumni). Saturday evening the students enjoyed
smoked halibut and a halibut fillet barbeque. The highlight
of the trip was the chance to strip eggs from a 60kg halibut
broodstock – which involved donning dry suits and jumping
into the large tank to wrestle the giants in 5°C saltwater!
Sunday was a little more relaxed as the students visited a
trout cage site in close proximity to the enormous windmills
in Pubnico. While the last stop on the tour didn’t work
out, the students were satisfied to head home with a great
deal of experiences gained from the weekend. Photos of the
trip will become available on the aquaculture website (www.nsac.ca/aqua)
in the near future.
