Professor Lynn Levy's Retirement
At the end of May, Professor Lynn Levy will be retiring from
the Department of Environmental Sciences after 36 years of service.
Lynn first joined the former Biology Department on August 16,
1971 and, although she has taught a number of courses over the
years, Lynn is best known as NSAC's Zoology professor. Her dedication
to, and enthusiasm for our students, both in the classroom and
as part of our Advisor system, is well known. This dedication
was recognized in 2003 when Lynn received the Award for Excellence
in Teaching. Lynn's departure will certainly leave the Department
of Environmental Sciences with a vacuum that will be difficult
to fill.
The Department of Environmental Sciences invites all staff
to a reception for Lynn on Tuesday May 8 from 3:00 to 4:30 PM
in Cox 220. Please drop by and wish Lynn well on her retirement
and relocation to Charlottetown.
Kentville Agricultural Centre - Security
Changes
Due to a change in security procedures at the Kentville Agricultural
Centre (federal building), all visitors must sign in at the
main federal reception desk. If you are a gov't employee, it
isn't necessary to sign in but you must stop at the main desk
and show your gov't ID badge, which you must wear at all times
while in this building. If you don't have your ID with you,
you will have to sign in and wear a visitor's badge.

New Department Website
10 -9 -8 -7 ... well you get the idea. We are preparing to
launch. On May 7, 2007 we will introduce one website for the
Department of Agriculture and one website for the Department
of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
There has been a tremendous effort to individualize the websites
and reflect the two departments. There will be similarities
in the look of the two sites, however each are distinct in material
and will benefit our clients and their needs.
As you will see the marketing and trade, business development,
product and quality development, policy and planning, communications
and fisheries enforcement are housed on the agriculture website.
There is a reference on the fish website to the common service
areas.
I'd like to formally recognize Cheryl Kienzle, our webmaster
and project manager, for her work in managing over 5000 files.
As well, Rene Wall with our CSU was instrumental in managing
the move to a new server and handling 12 databases we had on
our original site. Thanks also to Kim Baldwin of Policy and
Planning, who helped with the content changes.
Our new website URLs are : Agriculture www.gov.ns.ca/agri
Fisheries and Aquaculture www.gov.ns.ca/fish
Please keep in mind the appropriate website address when ordering
business cards, letter head, etc. As well, please share the
appropriate website address with your clients.
Thanks

New Railing Installed at Women’s
Institute
The Women’s Institute of NS (WINS), located on the campus
of the Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC), can now safely
use their deck, thanks to the Horticultural Engineering class
taught at NSAC by Wayne Bhola. The railing was designed by Mr.
Bhola and then built by the students in his Wood Construction
Technology lab under his supervision. The railing was installed
this week by Mr. Bhola, with the assistance of some of the Horticultural
staff.
The
deck, located behind the WINS building had been closed for several
years, due to there being no railing.
"Twenty-five students were able to participate in the
project. They were happy to know they were working on something
that will be on campus for several years", says Mr. Bhola.
Bhola, who has been part of the Department of Engineering at
NSAC for 33 years, plans to retire this summer.
In previous years, his classes have built benches, foot bridges
and arbours which are located throughout the campus.
Materials for the railing were donated by the Friends of the
Garden. The members of this group donate their time to keep
the gardens at NSAC looking beautiful.

Recruitment Update
Brian is back this week following a three week exploratory trip
to India. He accompanied Recruiting staff from Acadia, Cape Breton
University and Saint Mary’s University as part of an EduNova
coordinated and ACOA funded initiative. The trip involved participating
in Education Fairs in Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai, visiting private/International/IB
schools in Delhi, Dehradun and Bangalore and meeting with education
consulting agencies. The group met with Trade Commission and Visa
staff from the Canadian High Commission offices in Delhi, Bangalore
and Chennai and they hosted receptions for school principals/counsellors
in Delhi and Bangalore. In addition to the events the four university
representatives participated in and promoted studying in Nova
Scotia. Brian also had the opportunity to visit the University
of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University in Coimbatore.
The trip was very successful on a number of fronts. Definite
potential for NSAC was found in India. A number of excellent
contacts were made with agents who will be contacted to represent
NSAC on an ongoing basis to students there interested in studying
abroad. TNAU and UAS are both interested in MOU’s with
NSAC. There is a good possibility of developing a joint undergraduate
degree at TNAU. Brian is confident the trip will result in long
term benefit for NSAC. An added bonus of this trip was receiving
an application "on the stop" for this September to
the DEM - Equine program. This student’s letter of admission
is on its way to her. Exciting to have had such immediate result
from the trip – generally unexpected of a first trip to
a new market.
IPAC Nova Scotia Regional Chapter AGM
Interest Groups, Lobbyists and Government
Tuesday June 5th, 2007
Westin Nova Scotian Hotel, Commonwealth B
1181 Hollis St., Halifax 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
The Nova Scotia Regional Chapter of IPAC will be holding its
Annual General Meeting on June 5th at the Westin Nova Scotian
Hotel and is pleased to host the final event in its 2006-2007
luncheon series as part of the AGM. The luncheon will feature
a panel that will look at the roles of interest groups and lobbyists
and their relationship with government. The role of interest
groups and lobbyists is constantly under review and there have
been some scandals, but the persistence of these intermediaries
continues to be a central part of the functioning of a democracy
and of the operation of a complex governmental structure. Interest
groups are ubiquitous, constantly in action and necessary to
signal important issues and aggregate interests.
The panel will be comprised of:
Dr. Jim McNiven, Senior Policy Research Advisor
with Canmac Economics and Retired Professor and R.A. Jodrey
Chair in Commerce with the School of Public Administration and
the School of Business Administration, Dalhousie University.
Hon. Peter McCreath, President of PMC Communications
Inc. President, PMC Communications Inc.; President, Atlantic
Dream Homes; Managing Director of Nova Monarca Canada Inc. of
Nova Scotia; and former Minister of Veterans Affairs, Government
of Canada.
Judith Cabrita, Former President of the Tourism
Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) and currently President
of JBC & Associates.
A lunch of soup and sandwiches will be provided. Click
