Atlantic Poultry
Research Centre Grand Opening
Preparations are underway for the grand opening of the Atlantic
Poultry Research Centre on Wednesday, May 30 on the NSAC campus.
We are extending an invitation to all members of the NSAC campus
community to tour the facility between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. and
enjoy a famous "tailgate" barbeque hosted by the
Animal Science department. Look forward to seeing everyone
there.
Sixteenth Annual NSAC Spring Golf Classic

Time: 8:00 am with first group teeing off at 8:30 am
Place: Mountain Golf & Country Club, Truro
Green Fees: $34 (payable at the Club)
Power Cart Rental: $15 for ½ the cart

Hendricus van Wilgenburg will be presenting a 90-minute seminar
on the topic of preparing successful ethics submissions. on
Monday, May 28 (as noted above) Mr. van Wilgenburg has served
as the ethicist on the NSAC Research Ethics Board for a number
of years and has also been a member of REB's at Dalhousie University.
He is the author of many successful ethics submissions and
will bring to the seminar a perspective that reflects the ethics
submission review process from the viewpoint of the researcher
and the REB member. He believes that preparing a submission
does not have to be a painful process, and he will offer a
number of tips to help you prepare a successful document. If
you are currently struggling to prepare a submission or plan
to in the future, then, this is a great opportunity to get
your questions answered. Come just to satisfy your curiousity!

Poultry Research at NSAC

According to Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) graduate
student Michelle Daniel, the secret to obtaining a good quality
egg shell is sufficient calcium. Laying hens need a certain
amount of calcium in order to prevent a soft shell or cracks
in the shell. To meet the calcium requirement for shell quality,
bird diets generally contain powdered limestone or a mixture
of limestone and oyster shell. However, one of the biggest
issues with oyster shell is that it costs approximately three
times that of limestone. Hence, an alternative calcium source
