Joseph Donkor Key Note Speaker at Lieutenant
Governor Tea
NSAC M. Sc. Candidate Joseph Donkor has become well-known for
his public speaking talents. In August 2006, Joseph won first
prize for the oral presentation at the graduate level competition
at the Canadian Society of Animal Science Conference held in
Halifax. Joseph demonstrated his winning speaking skills on
February 22nd, wowing a crowd of over 300 as the key note speaker
at a tea in honour of Nova Scotia’s Lieutenant Governor
Mayann Francis.
The
tea, in celebration of Black History Month, was hosted by Douglas
Street School with three other elementary schools, 30 honoured
senior citizens of the Truro community, and local school board
officials participating. The Douglas Street School gymnasium
was packed; decorated with artifacts from numerous African countries,
including a display from NSAC International. The Canadian flag
and the Ghana flag, in honour of Joseph, were focal points.
Joseph addressed the audience in traditional Ghanaian dress.
His speech was entitled “The Role of the Elderly in Africa.”
Joseph said that our elders are our role models and encouraged
audience members to respect the seniors of their communities,
to treat them as they would want to be treated. Joseph shared
a Ghanaian proverb that describes the importance and contribution
made by elderly women. Literal translation of the proverb states
that elderly women are like flowers in a garden- they are the
beauty and the seeds of the garden. Joseph wants us to remember
that the elders of our families and communities have provided
us with the foundation on which we build our opportunities on.
