Tools and Technologies to Control Aleutian
Disease in Mink
Bible
Hill--Nova Scotia Agricultural College (NSAC) is pleased to
announce the recent support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities
Agency (ACOA) of $1.81 million over five years through the Atlantic
Innovation Fund for an innovative project that will help to
develop technologies which will support management strategies
to control Aleutian Disease (AD) in the mink industry.
Mink ranching is a multi-million dollar industry for Nova Scotia.
Presently, AD is the number one infectious disease on mink ranches
and costs the Nova Scotia mink industry over one million dollars
annually in testing and removing infected animals. Although
the Nova Scotia mink industry is internationally recognized
for its exceptional quality, AD severely limits both production
and the sale of breeding stock in national and international
markets. Complete article...

Hello from Recruitment!
During these two weeks, Craig and Nick have been traveling
the province and meeting with prospective students. I’ve
been busy planning University Day and am almost finished the
leg-work. The 400 invitations to Guidance Counselors are going
out in the mail today and all of our prospective students have
been contacted. The registrations are rolling in! Just as a
reminder: please send in your Expo and Tour forms.
This time of year is busy for Recruitment, as we have several
on and off campus activities that we plan and host. So far this
month, we’ve hosted 70 grade 11 and 12 science students
from local schools and we would particularly like to thank Judy
Grant for her tireless efforts. The students love her labs and
we appreciate all she offers to our events.
In addition to these students, we also have the pleasure of
hosting the 4H conference again this year. Engineering, Business
and Social Science, Environmental Horticulture and Animal Science
have all offered to contribute to the events by creating hand’s
on activities for the students. Thanks to each department and
facilitator!
Off campus, recruitment is assisting in the planning of the
NSISP Student Conference in May, held at the Annapolis Basin
Conference Centre. At this event, NSAC will have the opportunity
to meet with 70 international High School students who are in
the process of exploring Nova Scotia post secondary institutions.
As one of the committee members, NSAC will be well represented
as I will be interacting with the students over three days.
Until next time,
Monica

Several people attended "Meet the Agrologists" last
Wednesday night at the Glengarry. The event, which was hosted
by the Atlantic Institutes of Agrologists, was a great opportunity
for students to practice their networking skills and to become
acquainted with opportunities in agriculture.
