African Heritage Fact: Did you know...

medical school in Chicago, where he received his M.D. in 1883.
He founded the Provident Hospital in Chicago in 1891 and he

New Head of Engineering Department Announced
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Peter Havard has been appointed
Head of the Department
of Engineering for a term that extends to October 31, 2007.
Well-known as "quiet and effective" in his teaching
in a wide range of subjects in engineering, as well as in his
research collaborations. I'm sure that the Engineering Department
and NSAC as a community will welcome and support Dr. Havard
in this new role. The Department of Engineering is in the second
year of implementing its forward-thinking strategic plan entitled
"Engineering Innovation: Empowering the Bio-Economy",
and Dr. Havard will continue to lead this vision forward with
fresh perspective.
I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Professor Kevin Sibley
well as he takes leave from the Department Head role. His leadership
and dedication to the Engineering Department through strategic
and action planning has been key to the recent academic renewal
and success of the department, and he will be missed during
this period of leave. I look forward to his return as Department
Head on November 1, 2007.
Dr. Leslie MacLaren, VP-Academic

his speech, Johnstone said that coming to NSAC was the best
decision he had ever made for himself.

If a tree falls in front of Cumming Hall, would anybody
hear about it?
This sad old maple was cut down by the grounds crew, just after
lunch on Tuesday, Feb. 6th. The tree, which was approximately
100 years old, had rotted and could not be saved.
